“lovely stay”
Reviewed April 26, 2012

We stayed 3 nights midweek in the fabulous room 3. It is absolutely HUGE! There is a roll top bath in the room itself and a wonderful log fire which is all set to light when you arrive. They then set it again when the room is made up. The room was spotless as was the shower room which was also an impressive size. When you get back to the room in the evening there is bottled water replenished each evening. There are no tea/coffee facilities in the room but they will bring tray with kettle and fresh milk in a thermos if requested. There is an ipod dock and large tv and dvd player. There is a good choice of dvds in the corridor to choose from. A previous review said it was noisy. If you have no tv or music on you can hear a bit of noise from the bar but it stops when the pub shuts and did not bother us in the least.
We ate here all 3 nights and the food was delicious. Service was also very good. Prompt but not intrusive. Good wine list - ALL wines are half price on Tuesday evenings! Also nice selection of real ales for hubby to try.
All in all this was a wonderful place to stay and is close to Bath and a few National Trust places. Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: It has to be room 3.

We stayed in room 3, which is a beautiful, huge room. As far as the aesthetics go, it was perfect. With a roaring log fire, gorgeous bath in the room and an enormous bed it really was extremely luxurious. But... Unfortunately our stay was spoiled by the noise from the bar below. It appears that there is no soundproofing at all between the room and the bar. Even when the pub was closed, you could hear every word said by the staff and by 10pm it sounded like Bath rugby squad had arrived for post match celebrations. This was on a Wednesday evening, so I can only imagine the level of noise at the weekend. At £175 per night I wouldn't expect to have any complaints, but this really spoiled our stay. Having said that, the staff were lovely and the food was very good, but the noise was incredible and for that reason alone, I would not recommend this room = particularly as it costs £175 per night!

Room Tip: Don't chose Room 3 if pub noise bothers you.

We live nearby so haven't stayed there but the food is excellent and the atmosphere very welcoming. We eat there most weekends and always enjoy it.

We stayed two nights as part of a Westcountry trip in August this year.
There's no denying the history of this stunning building but we were so impressed too by the modern decor in the rooms.
We stayed in room 2 which was plenty big enough for the two of us and long weekend's luggage.
There's just so much to see and do in this area too - thoroughly recommend a visit to Laycock down the road - one day didn't really give us enough time to see the whole village!
We'll be back most definitely... oh and the food was great - really good gastro pub fayre!

What a great place!! Booked this for my wife's birthday. Great staff, great room and fantastic food in the restaurant downstairs! I highly recommend this place!! The only downside was that there wasn't enough hot water for all the rooms at the same time. As all the rooms have beautiful baths, everyone wants to use them at the same time before they go out for the evening. Apart from that... Simply amazing!!

We stayed here as a couple with our One year old little girl. The place is gorgeous, spotlessly clean with a real cosy feeling. We stayed in Room 2 which was spacious, lovely soft bed, clean bathroom and big flat screen tv. The restaurant and bar is lovely, I especially liked breakfast as its really intimate all the cereals are laid out along with fresh fruit but its all done in such a rustic way that you almost wish it was winter so you could curl up in front of the fire with your bowl of porridge! Unfortunately for us it poured with rain for 3 days but it would have been lovely to have seen the sun as you can sit out in the garden or go for a walk round the village and in the woods. I would definitely re visit this place you will not be disappointed it really is very charming. We drove into Bath which took about 10 minutes but we was prepared to do this anyway, don't stay here if you think you can walk into Bath as you would be disappointed. This really is a hidden gem.

Room Tip: Apparently Room 3 is the one to opt for!

We stayed here for 2 nights in May as a double celebration and wasn't disappointed with our selection!

We had booked room 1 which is the smallest of the 3 rooms so i imagine the other 2 are huge as it was a good size! The bathroom was also nice and roomy and had a lovely shower.

We ate a couple of meals in the restaurant and was impressed with the standard of food and service. If we lived closer it would certainly be on our list of places to go for a lazy sunday afternoon lunch. There is also an excellent selection of wine and delicious cocktails. Breakfast is also very good, although i did miss the coffee making facilities in the room.

We felt it was a good location but might not be for you if you want to be in the centre of Bath. We got a taxi to the city which cost £15 each way.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay and Sam and the team made us feel very welcome.
