“Old bar atmosphere with good food and drink”
Reviewed January 29, 2014 via mobile

I've been here a few times. I like eating at restaurants that offer something different from my normal routine. This restaurant offers German cuisine that's a welcome change of pace when traveling through Peoria. It's an old establishment but feels like a cozy escape from the cold winters. Although the atmosphere is that of a bar, it's not a loud party environment. It's a place for a beer and some hot German food. Plenty quiet enough to carry on a conversation.

Hofbrau will satisfy your German taste buds. Would not spend the money in the future. Worth a try. Beer selection is excellent.

“Wonderful, Wonderful!”
Reviewed December 22, 2013

This is the most consistently great meal in Peoria! We can't return to Peoria without our "Hofbrau Fix"! This visit (12/21/13) meant we ventured out on a bitterly cold and icy evening. The roads and parking lot were dangerous. Luckily, we found a spot right in front of the door and the owners had dropped salt for the ice. We were greeted by a friendly waitress and seated at the table we had reserved. Reservations are a must here, especially on the weekend. We had our favorite waitress, even tho they are all good. She immediately took our drink order and asked if we wanted appetizers. Their smoked salmon is an excellent choice for starters. They also bring some great little german rye bread. When the drinks arrived, she took our dinner orders. Within 10 min. our dinners arrived piping hot. I had sauerbraten with red cabbage and spatzele. I also ordered my favorite side of creamed spinach. My wife ordered beef rouladen with the same sides, no spinach. We shared our meat entrées (smothered in german gravy) with each other. Both were exceptional and the portion was enough to fiil us up. The red cabbage was even tastier than we remembered. The spatzele was great and creamy. We shared the spinach which has a hint of nutmeg, I believe. (also excellent).
The prices may seem a bit high to some, but this is a complete experience. It is like walking into a German pub, so we feel we are transported to another country when we visit here. We were too full to have dessert. They also have a huge selection of unique beers, both bottled and on tap. If you visit on Wednesday for lunch, try the Goulash soup. It is exceptional and they usually run out of it.

“Wow! great German food”
Reviewed December 9, 2013

If you are looking for an authentic German experience, this is the place. Everything is homemade. The menu has something for everyone. We tried the Jaeger schnitzel, crispy duck, and grilled pork chops. Everyone was very happy with their meal. The spaetzel and sourbrauten gravy is wonderful! Can't wait to go back.
