We stayed with Barra lodge from 19 May until 31 May and took our young children along.
We found the accomodation quite rustic, however that is what added to the charm of being there. The food was excellent. Babysitting was easily arranged when required. Staff were frindly and always went the extra mile to make the children happy.
The Dive centre (Barra Dive) is a very well run dive centre the runs like clockwork, briefings were thorough and the staff and instructors were very friendly and provided individual attention to all divers. All hire equipment used by us was in excellent condition. (scubapro)Safety was certainly practiced to the highest standard. All this contributed to very relaxed diving in some truly world class reefs.

My husband and I went to Barra Lodge with our two boys 10 and 16. What a warm and welcoming experience. The casitas we stayed in were basic but pleasent the view from our room was beautiful. The boys had so much to do this is definitely a welcome family holiday destination. The food was as good as we could find in hotels in SA, understanding from the staff that all comes from SA it really amazed me. I will come back again and will make sure the next time I come back I will bring all my friends.

My Mom and Dad arrived at Barra Lodge and were put in a room that was dirty and old, and dirty. They changed there room as it was there 50th Wedding Anniversary Holiday and they looked out over the back of the resort after requesting a sea view room.

There rooms were changed after much debate, only to find that at night there were large rats running over the exposed rafters in the roof. Which when my parents reported did not seem to bother the staff. There was a large hole in the bathroom door and huge cracks on the balcony with a view of dry earth with no grass or lawn visible. The shower was so dirty my parents refused to use it. All this for the price of an excellent resort in Mauritius.

The food on the other hand was good as was the beautiful beach, but the broken loungers and umbrella's on the beach were hard to sit on and added no protection from the sun at all.

My parents want to warn other travelers that this resort has not had any work done to it in over 15 years and is very run down. Stay at this resort at your own risk

This was our first trip to Mozambique and we were really excited about staying at Barra Lodge. After a two day drive from Johannesburg we arrived tired and weary. Our first impression of Barra Lodge was that it was also tired and weary. To say that we were disappointed with our room was an understatement. The sea view was almost non existent and the bathroom was awful. The overhead fan in the room didn't work and the floor fan did just that - fanned the floor - and it didn't swivel. We reported this several times and were promised that it would be changed - but all that happened was that some tape was put round it to try and keep it up. Needless to say this didn't work. We were almost next to the dive centre and the tractors at 6.00 were the best alarm call we have had for a long time. But not good if you want to try and sleep in.
Things get better with the pool and restaurant. We were there for ten days and the menu wasn't repeated once. The standard of food was good and varied - and the soup was always very tasty. The icecream maker was broken more often than not though - and despite all the coconuts everywhere there was no coconut icecream! Breakfasts were good (apart from the cereals which were always stale and damp). The staff were all friendly and helpful.
The beach is amazing BUT there are only eight or nine sunbeds. Nowhere near enough for a resort the size of Barra.
We were given excellent advice and directions for driving back to Joburg via the Kruger. A long drive but worth it. We did an overnight stop at Machampane Camp http://www.dolimpopo.com/machampane-luxury-camp-more.html .
Tofu is about 10 minute drive from Barra and well worth a visit. Plenty of stalls to buy gifts. Go to Casa Barry and Bamboozi for good food and views.
Overall - loved Mozambique but until Barra Lodge is given an overhaul find somewhere else to stay.

Stayed at Barra lodge for 9 days - mainly for diving - had a wonderful time - what ever you do just never ever use madbookings.com to book your flights when travelling to mozambique - when things go wrong they just leave you to sort everything out on your own. They also advertise the flights from jhb to inhambane and back as direct whilst they are not even close to direct - for eg the flight there actually goes jhb to maputo to vilanculous then only to inhambane. They insist they know nothing of this but this is unlikely as when it happened to us it had been going on for sometime already. The delays and re routing led us to miss our connecting flights and with us stuck in the middle of nowhere with no phone numbers etc we would of really appreciated some advice or recommendations from madbookings for where to stay in jhb, possibly some assistance in booking new flights etc. Instead they seemed irriatated by being called on a Sunday and told us the problem was ours to solve. We landed 3 hours late and after getting luggage etc it was quite late but we managed to get ourselves sorted - absolutely no thanks to madbookings. Go to Mozambique and Barra Lodge - its awesome - just never use madbookings to book your flights
