“Nice but overpriced and needs work”
Reviewed April 17, 2011

We had booked one night at Bamboozi in a chalet at the top of the dune. The view is gorgeous and the place is quiet and relaxing. However, on the first day we had no electricity at all and were eventually moved to the No.1 Sea View chalet, which is more expensive for no obvious reason. Following a thunderstorm overnight we woke to a completely flooded room.... Also, there was no hot water availble at all, and given that the weather was getting a bit colder, this was quite miserable. The restaurant has a very limited and quite pricey menu, but the location is fantastic. All in all, the place is too expensive for what you actually get.

First of all - the location including the view from the bar / restaurant is amazing. But there are several points to improve.
Positive:
- Liquid adventures is just next to (or even attached) to the resort. Snorkelling with whale sharks was just perfect (if you're lucky enough to see them..)
- The bar has a great atmosphere and the meals are good - specially the prawns

Negative:
- Although the sea view bungalow was nice, it is overpriced for what it is (not even a fan, and it can get really hot in January). The shower was one of the worst we had in mocambique with smelly water, the toilet barely working
- We had bed bugs (first we thought they were moskito bites as there are many of them) but I know the differences from first hand experiences

We stayed in the sea view chalet, which is very nice and great to see the sunrise from bed. But it was expensive for what you get and with a low wall on the bathroom security could be a problem. The beach is nice and there is a good quality dive centre on site. The bar is noisy but popular with loud dance music all day long. Food is ok but better and cheaper available elsewhere in local places. Not a bad choice but their prices are a bit high for what's on offer

We spent 4 days at Praia do Tofo to scuba dive and snorkel with the whale sharks, and I wanted to stay someplace on the beach. We ended up booking one of the basic chalets (#5) at Bamboozie, and the location couldn't have been better! Separated slightly from the other chalets (which are near the pool), chalet #5 is actually just steps from the dive shop and only a few meters farther to the beach, and its location within the resort made it quiet and private at night.

I also enjoyed the location of Bamboozie as a whole. The resort is farther north along the beach compared to most of the Tofo accommodations, so the beach area is relatively quiet and extremely peaceful at night. It's about 20 minutes' walk along the beach to town, making it easy to go elsewhere to dinner (since the menu at the on-site restaurant is a bit limited). Walking back at night, since the resort is away from the light pollution from the town, I was astonished at how many stars you could see!

Our only problem with the location was the road to the resort. Unlike some places in Tofo, Bamboozie claims that you don't need a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to get there. But it would probably help! We were surprised by the difficult sandy road and twice stopped to confirm we were on the right road (Later, we were asked the same thing by new people driving in). Although we were able to reach the resort in our little compact rental car, we had a difficult time driving back out again, getting our car stuck in the sand more than once.

The chalet itself was basic but comfortable. The bedroom had a double bed, and two twin beds had been set up in the main room. Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of air flow through the chalet (especially in the bedroom), even sleeping with the doors wide open. The mosquito nets blocked out what little breeze did reach inside, making it quite hot for sleeping, and we began a habit of taking a dip in the pool last thing before going to bed to try to keep cool.

The bathroom in the chalet was convenient for showering, since we could come in straight from the beach or from the dive shop next door. The shower had ample hot water, and the chalet was equipped with two sinks (one in the bathroom, one in the main room). However, the toilet in our chalet did not flush well at all, and with four people, we opted to walk down to the shared bathroom for the huts and campsites.

The resort kept a large container of drinking water, and we found it very convenient to have a large 5-liter water bottle to refill and bring back up to the chalet. We had planned to use the communal refrigerator to store beer and juice, but after the first day, we found the staff had cleaned it out and our bag of drinks was sitting outside. It would have been a good idea to bring along a cooler to keep in our chalet, though I'm not sure about the availability of ice. One other convenience was having a few headlamps and a camping lantern, even though the chalet had electric lights. The power at the resort shuts of nightly, so it was good to have a light source if we were up late or had to get up in the night. Also, one night the generator gave out at 18:30, so there was no power at all in the evening.

When we arrived, check-in was a bit confusing as the management had just changed, and had limited records of our reservation, so it was also a good thing that we had a printed copy of it with us.

Overall, I really enjoyed our stay. It wasn't especially luxurious, but since we were camping later in our trip and had all the equipment, the chalet was a nice step up from pitching our own tents and sharing all of the facilities.

Bamboozi is set on a beautiful beach surrounded by acres of coconut groves. However, it's service is no match to its beauty.

I had money stolen from their safe and my toiletries were taken from my room mid-afternoon. Despite advising that valuables be stored in their safe, when money was missing from my money bag that had been taped closed two nights in a row they looked at me like I was an idiot when I complained. "Oh no. It's no safe with a lock or anything. It's just a cardboard box we keep behind the desk. People are in and out of this office all the time so I don't know why you'd keep it here." I had written on the outside of my money belt the amount inside, but that still didn't deter the person from taking it.

Go to Turtle Cove instead.

We stayed in Seaview chalet no.1. Knowing that we had booked accomodation at a backpackers, we were not expecting too much. On arrival we were delighted with our cottage on top of the dune, overlooking the sea: double bed with large mozzie net, open air bathroom & shower, fridge and kettle in the room and deck with views to die for. We always had warm water available, electricity went off late at night and came on the next morning- never a hassle unless you want the fan on at night. The water in the bathroom did have a strange smell, but is potable. There is a separate water tank for drinking water.
The advantage of being on top of the dune is the constant cool breeze which keeps you nice and cool all day. Other than the restaurant which is next to the cottage, the rest of Bamboozi's accomodation is located behind the dunes.
We were extremely lucky in that the crowds had all left by the time we arrived on 11 January and the lodge was very quiet. We had one night with a rawcous group at the restaurant, but the rest of the time it was extremely peaceful. Of course this could be very different in high season!
The restaurant had 3 vegan dishes and a few vegetarian dishes available. Food prices were comparable with SAfrica. Service speed can vary, but the restaurant deck overlooks the sea which is lovely.
The pool was broken when we were there but that was ok as we were in the sea constantly anyway! There was a sign up that Bamboozi was for sale when we were there. Not sure when this sale will happen and what changes might be made.
The beach is lovely- golden firm sand- perfect for long walks and even a run on the beach. There were some small blue bottles when we were there. Unfortunately a person cannot snorkel directly from the beach.
For diving info, please refer to our review for Liquid Adventures, which is based at Bamboozi.
Town is an easy 15 minute walk down the beach. Not too much to do there- a small craft market and a handful of restaurants. Some other lodges on the way to town along the beach.
We took rands in to Mozambique, expecting an ATM at the aiport or Inhambane. There is no ATM at the Inhambane airport and our Mastercard was not accepted anywhere except at Bamboozi and Liquid Adventures. A 5% surcharge is added. ATM's only accept Visa here. Metical's are best at the market. We paid in rands at Bamboozi and recieved change in Mets, which we could use elsewhere. Beware Dino's restaurant down the beach where a shameful exchange rate is given!
All in all we had a lovely holiday and didn't feel like we were staying at a backpackers!

We were looking to stay somewhere rather more upmarket than a "Backpackers lodge" but found Bamboozi had one chalet right on the top of the dunes looking out to sea. Absolutely wonderful spot so we took it for 4 nights. The room was simple but OK with a fridge to keep the beer cold and a mossie net to keep the buggers out.
The en-suite bathroom had a shower which worked OK and had plenty of hot water.
The chalet had it's own terrace with a couple of loungers and the view was wonderful. The resturant and bar were quite good with simple good food and drink at sensible prices.
For the money it was first rate, it was the most expensive of Bamboozi's chalets but worth every penny, it worked out at about £60 a night, we have stayed in lodges in Africa that have charged £200 a night that were not as good.
