Zavora Lodge
Reviewed October 12, 2013

We had a very good 3 night stay in Zavora Lodge (booked through Scuba Mozambique). Zavora is remote but that is the point of going. Very long empty stretch of beach. Excellent food throughout the stay. Good clean rooms. We did some dives with Moz Divers (next door). Not great conditions for diving whilst we were there which was a shame but Moz Divers were very professional and nice people. It was whale season so still plenty of whales to see from the boat/land.

We stayed in september, during the low season and also the time of the year to see humpback whales. Staff very friendly and helpfull. Good food and an amanzing view to watch humpback whales. New managers working hard to provide even better service.

...the lodge itself is more of a 'Good' no frills accommodation.
This was one of the hightlights of our trip to Mozambique simply for the incredible opportunity to get close to giant mantas and humpback whales - a wonderful experience!
The location is fairly remote - you need a 4 wheel drive or to organise a transfer with the lodge - but is well worth for the dramatic raw scenario. Jill, the manager, was really helpful and super efficient and organised perfectly timed transfers for us.
The lodge comprises a few mismatched buildings spread on the top of the a sand dune with fabulous views of the massive bay, a little restaurant and a fantastic dive center (mozdivers) which is the real reason for coming here!! John and Yara are professional, friendly and genuinely interested in marine conservation. Due to conditions the dives can be a hit or miss as viz can be very poor but that nutritive soup attracts wonderful creatures and we were fortunate to spend a magical hour underwater surrounded by gentle Giant mantas! August being the whale season we saw many from the boat and could hear them calling during our dives. the dive guides (Mani, Zinho and Mauro) were great at spotting them and would slow down and get close so we could get a good look.
We had a 'mini' house with sea views, two basic rooms, a bathroom and a reasonably well furnished kitchen (which works only if you bring your provisions as there are no shops anywhere around!). We were happy enough eating at the restaurant everyday - there was enough variety, a good drinks selection and the food was fairly good.

My wife and I have just spent a week of diving at the Zavora Lodge. It was a stay out of context with great diving and in the presence extremely welcoming and forthcoming people. The diving centre is well organised and the manager receptive for suggestions. The accomodation of the lodge is functional and clean. The food is delicious and variable, even for people not eating meat. What I enjoyed most was the extreme friendliness and interesting discussions with staff members and people met, not to mention the dives which were absolutely stunning (month of August).

The Most wonderful Beach. Perfect for swimming, surfing and walking. Our extended family has these needs and much more. The self catering cottage, was fully serviced and perched right on top of the dune just a short 50 metre walk from the sea. We were very happy with the Dive facilities and three of our teenagers had multiple dives. The fishermen launching their boats were very considerate to those of us using the beach and the peace was only disturbed by the excitement of the folks that had good catches!! The staff are all very hospitable and we are looking forward to our return trip in September. Hopefully the whales will still be cavorting about in the bay!

Gosh where do I begin....

I went to Zavora lodge in April 2013 for a weekend away with a group of 12 people.

We booked through their website which looked very nice (shows you how deceiving photos are), for the bungalows. Not knowing the bungalow are near a swamp where you are eaten alive by mosquito.

We arrived on a rainy late afternoon. So we just wanted something nice and cozy.
We arrived at reception with the owners or manager smelling of booze and didn't know what was cracking.

We asked them if it would be possible to move bungalows to a sea view house and they said they are fully booked. But we would be able to move in the morning as those people are departing the next day. We were happy with that - not knowing the disaster the next day!

So we got our key and went to where our bungalow was.
Our first reaction was this is disgusting and we wanted to leave immediately.
So we got into our car and looked around the in the area for something nice to stay in. And guess what...there was NOTHING and if there was they were just as DISGUSTING AND DIRTY as Zavora Lodge.

We decided to return to the lodge and just stay for one night then leave in the morning, very early.

Our bungalow was disgusting, the beds were stained and so were the covers . duvets.
The freezer was rusted
the kitchen counter was broken
The cutlery was dirty.
Braai area was among broken down tractors / cars (junk yard) The braai was so broken you couldn't even braai.

Then we decided to go to the restaurant. We are the waiter about the food and he said the fish / prawns were about 3 days old and so we banked on the chicken which we hoped that we wouldn't get salmonella.

We took a visit to our friends "sea view" house. what we saw was a roof caving in / mold walls mosquito infested house / ceiling!!!

We woke up the next morning actually being able to see what was happening around zavora lodge. There were broken houses around, drunk people begging inside the lodge for money.

We thought okay let us go and see if they "new" house that we were supposed to move into was any better. We didn't get with in a meter of the house and it stunk like urine and vomit!

This place was the worst place I have EVER BEEN TO. They will never see me again.
Whatever you do do not visit this lodge. I actually wouldn't even call this a lodge, I would call this a DUMP! I do NOT recommend this place at all!!!!

Please note that Zavora Lodge is under new management. The lodge is being upgraded at present. Your complaints have been noted and have been addressed. We would like to extend an invitation to and your partner to visit us again for a free two night stay. The derelict building is a historical monument which we do not yet have permission to improve.

We stayed at Zavora Lodge over Xmas as part of a diving holiday.

We stayed in the divers cottages. If you are staying the divers cottages ask for the new ones, they are much better than the old ones.

It is a great location. The prices are reasonable for what you get, but it is fairly basic standards.

The menu in the restaurant is average at best, no salad which was pretty poor. Xmas was a bit odd. They struggled with ice for the entire time. The restaurant opened for Xmas lunch but closed for dinner which was a pain as we were not self catering at all. We ended up driving into Tofo for dinner.

We are going back again in March but that is primarily for the diving. This time we are trying the seafacing cottages.

Room Tip: Ask for the new divers rooms.
