“Amazing for a suburban strip mall”

Siri Thai is run by people from Thailand who know how to cook. In fact they offer classes on how to do it, but I digress.. On weekdays, there are few people here. That means great service, attentive wait staff, fast meals. There's a full bar as well as foofy drinks like bubble tea and smoothies. There are all the Thai food standbys and some things I wouldn't expect like escargots. They allow you to pick the level of spiciness. My son and I love it hot and spicy. My daughter - make it bland. And, we are all satisfied. The atmosphere makes one feel a bit like one is in Thailand and provides a basis for conversation. This is in a strip mall, which probably hurts their business a bit, but makes it easy for good service - and it is right on Palatine Rd. in the center of town.

We've passed by the strip shopping mall that Siri Thai II is located in many times, but it's nestled in a corner, and the sign on the outside is relatively small and plain...it doesn't look very inviting. As luck would have it, we went online to try and find a local Palatine restaurant that would be open for Sunday lunch, to celebrate a family member's birthday, and Siri Thai came up. A quick check of its website gave a nice explanation of what Thai food is, (exotic yet accessible, with Chinese and Indian influence.) The online menu was diverse, with several "familiar" choices, like Sweet and Sour entrees, that we hoped would allow even the "pickiest" eater in our group to find something they'd eat. We decided to give it a try.

Since we went early on a Sunday afternoon, there wasn't any competition for parking spots in the strip mall lot. During busy times, additional parking appears to be available in a larger lot across Palatine Road. There's a small window display of Thai ceramics and other decorative artwork that you can see before entering the door to the restaurant.
Once inside, there are additional display cases with more; the walls of the restaurant are painted in a rich red hue and have some ornate tapestry-like wall hangings. It wasn't enough to make us feel like we'd been transported to a foreign land, but adds some interest.

Obviously, the main reason we went to the restaurant was to eat. There were so many choices, it was hard to decide what to order. (Actually, even before we thought about food, we noticed a hanging banner that mentioned "Bubble Milk Tea" drinks. I decided to be adventurous and try one....it's a non-alcoholic beverage that's like a fruit smoothie, with edible balls of tapioca in the bottom. The drink comes in coconut, watermelon, and mango flavors; I had the mango...It was delicious, and the rest of my family who took a sip agreed! The restaurant has a full bar with alcoholic choices of mixed drinks, beer and wine also available.)

We didn't order any appetizers or soup or salad, but among the entrees that our group had were Pad Thai Noodles with beef, "Pad Woon Sen," which was a rice noodle with chicken and vegetables, Thai style Fried Rice with chicken, Cashew Chicken, and Sweet & Sour Pork. The waitress patiently asked each person how spicy they wanted their dish, and most of the group just said "mild." (It was nice that each dish could be prepared to individual tastes, but since we intended to sample and share our food with one another, we felt it was best to go easy on everything.) The menu clearly states that they use NO MSG, which was a relief to one of our family members who is sensitive to it.

Our food came in a relatively short period of time (there weren't many other patrons in the restaurant when we were there, so service might be slower when they've got more customers.) It was ALL very good, and the serving portions were generous. There were recognizable pieces of meat and fresh vegetables in every dish. Among those of us who sampled everything, the "Pad Woon Sen" was the favorite entree, but even the "least adventuresome" member of our group who is a picky eater asked for a box to take home his Sweet & Sour leftovers, which is a big complement to the chef!

We definitely intend to return, and will probably try on a weekday, when, according to their menu, they offer several lunch specials that include soup and appetizer along with their entrees. In any case, Siri Thai II gets a great rating in our book!
