“Best place for Sushi in NW Suburbs”
Review of Sushi PARA

The sushi here is excellent and you can order off an "all you can eat" menu. The requirement is that you eat it in the restaurant or you have to pay for it. The lunch menu is less expensive, but a little less extensive.

Go early on weekends or be prepared for a wait. One bad thing about the place is that there is not a good place to wait.

We go there at least once a month.

Sushi in Chicagoland doesn't come cheaply, which makes anywhere offering an all-you-can-eat deal something of a diamond in the rough. Coming from the West Coast, I'm used to having very fresh sushi on nearly every street corner and learned not to judge a book by its cover; some of the best places have the simplest decor.

Enter Sushi Para, tucked in a strip mall in Palatine, and you'll find a rather minimalist appearance. The sushi bar is tucked away in the back and the place has probably no more than 20 tables. Be aware, it can fill up fast especially when rush hour starts, and when the lines build turn over time for tables is extremely slow due in large part to the horrible service that turns a decent place into a restaurant to be avoided. There can be four tables occupied and six servers on staff, and they still respond as slowly as the height of the evening. They don't make eye contact and stand around at the back of the restaurant, sometimes letting orders sit on the sushi bar for 10 to 15 minutes unattended. Refills on drinks take forever, even if you have your glasses lined up for example, and you can sit for 20 minutes after your bill is dropped off waiting for someone to take your credit card. Rule of thumb: walk up with your receipt to the hostess station/register, don't wait.

The regular menu is fairly typical, but the all-you-can-eat is the main attraction. BE WARNED: they use a lot of rice, which fills you up very quickly. Rolls as a result are large and usually stuffed with lettuce or vegetables. An 8 piece roll is a lot of food, and definitely don't think about leaving much on your plate or you will be charged. Sushi Para hasn't relaxed this policy in the three years I and friends have known about the place, and you can be charged $4 per piece (or the cost of a full roll if you haven't finished it all, which ranges from $5-15 depending on the one you ordered). Sometimes it's outrageous so be aware.

There are plenty of other sushi options in the northern suburbs, though few with the all-you-can-eat. However there are plenty more that offer good sushi or Japanese comfort food without the attitude and being plainly ignored that happens so often at Sushi Para. It isn't a one time event to be completely overlooked, especially when you're one of three customers in the place, so take your money elsewhere.

I haven't been dissapointed at Sushi Para. They are busy on Friday and Saturday nights. The food and drinks are very reasonable. This is a very casual resturant. Jeans and flip flops are just fine. Servers mainly speak English as a second language, so be patient and considerate to their limitations.

Long wait waitress's answer yes to everything. DO NOT BRING ANY PICKY PEOPLE HERE !! The sushi is good. You can get better atmosphere downtown but the bill will have extra zero's. Sushi served by the Lunch ladies in your HS cafeteria .

Yes the wait can be long, and the waitress's seem like they are not on earth, sometimes. The sushi is really excellent, fresh, and generously portioned. The rice under the fish is not any more than at Benihana's Sushi Bar in Wheeling.

Order as much as you like, but I recommend ordering in phases, so you can digest before ordering more. The dinner all you can eat has more sushi and fancy rolls than on the lunch all you can eat ($2.00 cheaper per person) but still the best value I've found for quality sushi.

The restaurant is immaculate, if a little stark. With these prices for excellent quality sushi you can give up the romantic lighting and pictures on the walls.
