We had a family get together for the 2012 Veteran's Day Weekend. We decided to meet at the Holiday and our group of nine was pleasantly impressed. Service was attentive. The Buffet had a selection of all types of meats from Prime Rib to fried fish. The were several options in vegetables and a simple but good salad bar. The dessert bar was exceptional with lots of excellent choices. It was well done and I think my whole family left stuffed.

I know it's not easy to make a success with a setup like this in a small town, but we were all very pleased. A couple of years ago we had a large birthday party here. It went well done but the facilities and the food appear to be getting better all of the time. Very good job and a great asset for Olney.

We ate dinner at the Holiday Motel & Restaurant. We've eaten there once a month for four months in the past 10 months. The last time we had the buffet. The fried chicken was not hot and the there were only a few chicken thighs on the buffet. The salads were good especially the cranberry salad. Mashed potatoes were good, as were the green beans. The lasagna had a good taste, but needed more tomato sauce. The waitress was short and rude. We had to ask for a refill on drinks, and after a long period of time, got one refill on coffee. Not a pleasant evening. I will not recommend this restaurant to friends.

OK...so take this hotel and put it in a major city and it would probably get 1 or 2 stars. It is old and even though it has been or is in the process of being renewed, it would never be my hotel of choice if there were a decent chain hotel around. (Yes, there is a Super 8 near by...but I said a decent hotel chain.) The remodeled rooms are limited by the old layout that was refreshed...but still old. New carpet, newer flat screen (even though very small) TV's, and fresh paint makes the rooms livable. The thing that bumps it up to 4 stars is the friendly and attentive staff and budget rates and cost. (The 20 oz soft drinks in the Pepsi machine were $1.25! The dinner buffet was $9.95.) It is the best hotel in town...so worthy of 4 stars even if it is a blast from the past.

We have experienced the Holiday in Olney from the halcyon days of the 60s and 70s to the decline in the 90s and now the renaissance of the grand hotel in the past few years. Julie and her team have transformed what could have been fodder for the wrecking ball to a jewel for the area hosting locals and tourists alike. We travel the country frequently and stay in lodging of various styles and amenities. Is the Holiday like a Courtyard Marriott in a metro center? No. But one would be hard pressed to match the caring and hospitality of the staff at the Holiday in Olney and the accommodations are comfortable. There is an old adage “Do the best with what you have”—Julie has done that in spades. I hope the local community is proud to have the Holiday in its midst—it certainly serves as a welcome respite for travelers, recreationalists, and transient workers and the food is excellent. We look forward to our annual trips to Olney and consider staying at the Holiday a treat.

Spent time there over spring break. The kids loved the indoor pool. Pet friendly too! The restaurant was really good. Rooms have a fridge and microwave.

Room Tip: We loved rooms 132 and 134!

My husband and I have lived here for many years. We enjoyed the Holiday way back in the day when it was the place to be, and many of our friends and family have stayed here over the years. When it slid downward and closed up years ago, we knew we would miss it.

Well, it's back! It's tons better, and well on the way to being what it always had the potential to be. People who stay there have reported good things to us, we stayed there one night when we had our hardwook refinished in our home, and we enjoyed it.

The only issue we have is the restaurant. The food's good--and there is plenty of it, and the price is reasonable. That's not it. The issue is the service of the wait staff. It's like no one has trained them in what to do, or they have never waited tables anywhere before. They don't have smiles, personalities...don't suggest any items to anyone, you have to ask, ''may I have a cocktail, glass of wine, etc.'' A friendly smile, an introduction, would go so far here. My 2 biggest issues are the hours of the restaurant(they close way too early, we prefer to eat in late evening) and when your server does bring your food, she never, ever comes back to check like they should. You know, ''Is everything ok here? Can I get you...''they totally miss the boat on this, every single time we go. We tip 20%, so it's not that we have a reputation of being cheap. We have a lot of friends, like to entertain, enjoy good times and good food. We enjoy having a restaurant again that provides us a place to take our family and friends.

But it could be so much more. Train that help better, and it will come back to you, tenfold. Class it up a tad bit in the evening--send someone around occasionally with a possible sample, get a better dessert menu, buy some cloth napkins and get rid of the oilcloth tablecloths after breakfast. Make it special...it could be not just good, but great.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for one of the ''new'' rooms...
