Yes, we also made the mistake of thinking Dumfries House was near the town of that name! However, our GPS, Freya, put us straight (named for Freya Stark who never lost her way). Despite our late arrival we were received a friendly welcome and shown to room 4 which turned out to be beautifully furnished. Unfortunately we stayed on one of the nights when the restaurant was closed but consoled ourselves with coffee and a dram in our room. Only one other room was occupied so it presented an opportunity to explore other rooms, all equally as beautiful as our room. We thought the bed and linen probably the best we have ever slept in. Breakfast was freshly cooked and excellent - as all cooks know, scrambled egg is not easy to get right. It would be nice to have more information on the decoration and textiles used, F&B colours etc. Not sure about the bathroom matting, especially round the loo, perhaps not a good idea in the long term.
After we left we toured the main house and explored the grounds, including the current project of the walled garden. You might think of developing a community garden corner for the locals to get together to grow salads and vegetables.More
