The Carleton of Oak Park
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in Oak Park

Reviewed November 5, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at the Carleton of Oak Park Motor Inn for 3 Nights. The Rooms have been clean, but had very thin walls. You could hear everything your neighbors said. The Hotel is located in a good neighborhood, but its a 20 minute ride with the green line to downtown Chicago. There are some restaurants near the hotel, I wouldn't recommend the Sportsbar inside the hotel. The food was ok but the service was terrible.
If you can live with a 20 minute ride to downtown and would like to save some money on the room, the Carleton is definitely a good choice for a few nights!

This property is privately owned and the owners pay particular attention to the needs of its guests. The lobby is beautiful and the attached restaurant is very good. I stayed in the main hotel which is definitely a step above the adjacent motor inn of the property. The motor inn is perfect for families but traveling as a couple the main hotel is much nicer. Great location, walking distance to green line (which is a quick hop to downtown Chicago), restaurants, frank Lloyd wright, and a great bike shop that you can rent to tour oak park. My room had an unusual odor and if I had been staying for more than one night I would have asked to switch but it was fine. Also, guests have access to YMCA down the street for exercise facilities. Would definitely come back!

This is a well-appointed, graceful hotel in the center of downtown Oak Park. We were here for a wedding reception. We enjoyed our large, restful room, massive jacuzzi, and the peace and quiet. We plan to stay here again.

Room Tip: We always ask for a room on a high floor, far from the elevator and the drink machine.

We stayed at the Carlton Oak Park a week ago. We enjoyed our surroundings, cleanliness, helpful staff, and our room! We stayed in the 1950's decorated annex to the main hotel. It was such a cute room and had all the comforts we needed, even a small kitchen with a microwave, refrigerator, Furniture was retro and I kept looking for Elvis! The bath was clean and there were lots of fluffy towels. Next time I would stay in the main hotel for a change of venue because it is such a grand, old hotel with beautiful furnishings. I found a cozy library and lounge to curl up with a book while waiting for my Honey. Two restaurants in the hotel! Just a short block or so to Oak Park where there are more restaurants, shops, and nice places to walk. The subway is so close (but you can't see or hear it from the hotel) and transportation to anywhere is very simple, including downtown and all points in any direction. What a cute town and a wonderful hotel. I would recommend the hotel if prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of downtown. The hotel is elegant and like staying in a European hotel. The front desk staff is attentive and thinks of everything. They are care for their guests and make the stay extra special. This place is a gem! Go there and enjoy!

The first thing I noticed when I entered the Carlton -Oak Park was that I was back to the 1930's. Lots of wood, low lighting, large comfortable chairs in the lounge. The rooms are clean and well lighted and also reminiscent of earlier years...but in a good way. The hotel is located in a renovated area of Oak Park not too far from the Frank Lloyd Wright house...about an easy 15 minute walk. There are a lot of interesting resturants in the area but we enjoyed the Barclay which is in the hotel. The train to downtown Chicago is just a block away. I am looking forward to another stay.

This is one of the finest hotels we've stayed at. We had a corner room (417) which was bright, airy, roomy, quiet and comfortable. They had a small kitchenette in the room which I have never seen in a hotel, so we could not only keep outside food cold and microwave, but we had real silverware and could use a sink. The bathroom was brightly tiles, with lots of space to keep tour cosmetic items. The TV was flat screen on the wall, easily seen from all angles of the room. The air conditioning was perfect, not the kind that went on and off all night. Also, it was positioned so it didn't blow on the bed. There were lots of chairs of various sizes and desks and table so you could put all your items out without crowding. The hotel itself is in a great location for visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright home and Oak Park neighborhood. Also, the hotel has a wonderful restaurant for dinner, Barclays, and a fabulous place for breakfast, Poor Phil's. Neither was too pricey, and both were friendly and had a nice Chicago atmosphere. The lobby of the hotel was lovely, and the front desk could not have been more helpful. I would go back in a minute!

Room Tip: Corner room had lots of light.

The Carleton was a top find for us. Recently redecorated, our room in the hotel (chosen over he motel for the quiet) was spacious, comfortable and quiet. We ate in the hotel (Bradley's) one night and had a great dinner. Cafe (Poor Phil's) in the front of the hotel was a great place for breakfast. The L was a quick one block walk, half hour trip downtown on the Loop. Free parking was an a nice bonus. We'd stay there again in a minute, whether traveling by air or car.
