Staff was very friendly and the neighborhood is nice. Near shops and the L. We were in the motel part. It was large and clean and we liked having the mini kitchen (micro, fridge, sink, plates, cutlery) and the little table. It was really ugly... not the lobby which was very pretty, just our room. I don't know how much this matters to most people but it was kind of a bummer for the money we paid. Nothing was dirty or old just ugly and it kind of made our romantic night... less romantic. But that was the only flaw. :)

We recently stayed in the motel portion of the Carleton of Oak Park. It was very clean and the beds were comfortable. The furnishings and decor are outdated and the walls are very thin. We could hold a conversation through the wall with my sister who was staying in the room next door. The prices were much less than the main hotel and we were looking to save some money. That being said, the rooms were about $30 overpriced. It was located right in the heart of Oak Park and easy to walk to restaurants, bars, shops, and the "L" to get into downtown Chicago.

While looking for a Chicago hotel that was in a quiet, traffic-free area yet convenient to travel into the city, I found The Carleton of Oak Park. And what a find it was! Beautiful neighborhood, and a 3-minute walk to the "L" station for quick and simple jaunts into town, or anywhere else the CTA goes.
The hotel staff is wonderfully accommodating and helpful and the two adjacent restaurants feature great food at reasonable (for Chicago) prices.
Its on my list of highly recommended locations in this often hectic and noisy city.

Over a two-week period I stayed at the Carleton twice, once for two nights and a week later for five nights. It occupies a convenient location in a great community. When I go to Chicago my first choice of a hotel is the Carleton in Oak Park.

The rooms were comfortable, everything worked properly, housekeeping did a great job, and I enjoyed my stay.

The Carleton has two restaurants, Poor Phil's and Barclay's. I ate at Barclay's a few times but thought it was overpriced compared with the many competing eateries within a few blocks of it.

I had a great time in Oak Park, and the Carleton contributed to the experience. Recommended.

The Carelton is quite a large establishment but does not suffer from the impersonal atmosphere often associated with size. It is still independently run and this shows. As well as the main building there are also motel units available. Our room in the main hotel was spacious, had a double aspect, was comfortable and well equipped. The hotel includes two large restaurants, one more formal, the other less so. Unfortunately their position occupying much of the ground floor did make the lobby areas and lifts smell constantly of cooked food. The Carelton's position in Oak Park makes it ideal for exploring Chicago as it is only yards away from the end of the line 'L' station and a 20 minute ride from downtown. Oak Park itself is a pleasant, leafy suburb, with plenty to recommend it, particularly if you are interested in the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright whose home/studio and many commissions are in this area.

We stayed here for two nights while visiting Chicago. We chose it as we had a car but didn't want to take it into the city but rather catch public transport. There was free parking in one of a few carparks close to the hotel. The green line is just a short walk away and it was very easy to get into Chicago - the ride was about 20 minutes. The location is great because there's some good shopping nearby, as well as restaurants and a movie theatre. Our room was large, clean and well appointed. The staff were courteous but a little aloof. I'd definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone wanting to take public transport into the city but still have restaurants and shopping nearby.

This hotel is visible/easily walkable to/from the Metra, which is a BIG bonus if you are traveling to the area without a car. Plenty of restaurants and shops in the area are walkable, too, including a pharmacy.
The outside of the hotel is classic and charming; however, the "Motor Inn" rooms have walls so rice-paper thin that you can hear EVERY word and TV's on both sides. It is well worth the extra money to be in the main building.
This hotel is oddly not very accessible, with large banks of stairs on either side of the lobby. There is an odd "wheelchair lift" but the stairs make it difficult to transport luggage.
Room service was horrible- did not even answer the phone despite several attempts. I had to call the front desk and have them walk over and call back.
The main building room was clean, well-decorated and had ample counter space in the bathroom.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building. The motor inn is subpar.
