We live in Oak Park, IL and for us it is just a three block walk to the FLW studio. It is well worth the the trip to see where he did much of his work. The guides are very knowledgeable and give you a very accurate account of the studio and of his life, both professional and family. The walk along Forest Avenue after the studio tour is great also. There are examples of the prairie style architecture and also some wonderful Victorian homes to see. If you are really into learning about Frank Lloyd Wright, I would suggest reading the book Loving Frank by Nancy Horan. It is a fictional story but give you a feeling for the time in which Wright lived and the mores of that time. The studio tour last about an hour and then there is the gift shop which you should not miss.

Interesting tour, and a great introduction to Wright's work. Since there are a lot of Victorians as well as Wright's architecture in OP, you can really see what an iconoclast he was. In good weather the walking tour is fantastic. Personally I like the audio as it does give you information you wouldnt figure out on your own.

If you enjoy exciting architecture, come to Oak Park, Il The Metra "West Line" stops about two blocks from this historical district; or you can drive here. See the inside of his studio; and also take a walking tour. You can walk by yourself; or the studio can get you into a tour led by a guide. I prefer exploring on my own, and whether you go in a group or by yourself, you will see a large number of occupied residential homes he built. You will also find the Unity Temple that he designed. There is no fee to walk the historical district on your own, but there is a fee for the guided tour. . It is a short walk to restaurants only a few blocks away. Please bring a camera, you will be most pleased to review these pictures and share with friends.

Loved the Home and Studio tour. Didn't pay the extra for the historic district tour as you can easily do that on your own without paying the extra. (The historic district tour has an audio guide, but you can just walk it for free and we found several discarded pamphlets in the waste bins that provided information on all of the other sites.) Also, unless you are a professional photographer, don't bother paying the extra for "photography" fee for the Home and Studio tour. The lighting isn't great and the gift shop has plenty of postcards and books that have better shots than an amateur could ever get. It does get crowded, so know that you likely won't be able to simply arrive and take your tour right away. You will be given a specific tour time. Ours was about 45 minutes after we arrived. We used that time to walk the historic district. Our tour guide was excellent. She was very knowledgeable about architecture, Oak Park history, and Frank Lloyd Wright and his family.

We were lucky to have a car to take us to Oak Park as the traffic was quite heavy, but once there, we immersed ourselves in Frank Lloyd Wright territory. The FLW museum and studio are very well done. Our guide was a very well informed and knowledgeable volunteer and we were most impressed. The rooms we saw had a lovely patina and the entire site managed to avoid the theme park approach to attraction design.

We took an audio tour around the immediate area and enjoyed the variety of FLW houses, and those also in the style of his work were plentiful.

A fine morning's touring together with lunch in a delightful restaurant nearby in a most gracious and interesting part of Chicago.
