If you are a fan - this is almost a must see. Admittedly, the place is very early - FLW was finding his way - the evolution of his thought is perhaps all the more appreciated. In a long career, this is begining to Prarie School, and the humanization of personality through living space is worth experiencing. Guide knowledgeable, willing to answer questions, and the tour is fairly complete. If you metro, Oak Park has a neat little downtown, and of course you can take the audio guided walking tour. If you're timely (tours on the hour) stop in an see Hemmingway's birthplace for a completely different architecture style / furnishing experience, etc.

Knowledgeable docents with a real passion for the topic. Tour included bus from loop, tour of home and studio, walk through neighborhood and Unity Temple. Well worth it.

I decided to go to Oak Park early and start at the visitor centre so got off the green line train at Harlem as it's nearer than Oak Park. It didn't open until 10am but there are some great coffee shops in the area. The staff at the visitor centre were very helpful and gave a map of the area.
I ambled towards the Home and Studio passing several of his houses en route. You can recognise them pretty easily!
I generally don't do organized tours as I get bored easily but this was different. The guides keep up a steady pace which was perfect but are more than happy to answer any questions.

I bought the $3.95 map of the area showing all the important houses (not just the FLW ones) and wandered happily until the 91degrees got to me!

Even if you're not a F.L.W. fan, you'll enjoy the tour. The property and grounds were restored to 1909. The guides transport you back in time to 1909 to enjoy that era while learning about Frank's unique design creativity way ahead of his time. The craftsmanship of the buildings show his obsession to quality and a true control freak. There's something here for everyone. This is a bit of American History.

We did the house tour first, but you could reverse it and do just as well, if the house tour is full when you get there.A great view of early Wright. Easy trip on the L to get there.
