This is one of the places I always take visitors to. It is beautiful and the docents who lead tours are wonderful. You learn an immense amount about the architect, the period, his family. After the tour you can also take a walking tour of the historic district and see the outside of many other Wright designed houses and compare them to the Victorian houses surrounding them. The contrast makes you marvel at Wright's imagination that transformed architecture. If you then drive through the "bungalow belt" areas of Chicago, you get to see how much he influenced homes for regular people beyond the moneyed classes.

If you are a Frank Lloyd Wright fan, Oak Park is a must. The guided tour of his home and studio was really good. We also enjoyed the audio tour which takes you on a self-guided walk around the surrounding neighbourhood, where you will see a number of houses designed by Frank.

Watch the movie, and hope you get a good docent (I am sure they all are) as this is fascinating spot to learn and experience FLW. Great gift shop, too!

For a modest fee, this had to be one of the best experiences we had in Chicago. The center is run by volunteers who really give it their best. The one hour that we had with our guide, Joe, an engineer, was a spectacle: full of anecdotes, good tips, and a vibrant way to make the home and studio come alive.
Additionaly, you can buy a map of the area where the other houses designed by FLW are located, which makes for a great walk ending in the Unity temple and the centre of Oak Park. Great experience.
