We were pleasantly suprised to find such a good pub and restaurant so far out of the way.
Food was excellent, especially the home made pie, and the service was superb. Priced as pub grub, and therefore excellent value. They also run a taxi service which made life very relaxing after a long day.

Our party of 12 was amiably shipped in by Mike the driver and the food that followed was great. The pub is in a very nice location and was perfect respite from our own camping cooking! The lift back was equally well received, particularly after eating so much!

This is solely a restaurant review.

We were staying late August bank holiday weekend (late August 2013) in a camping/B&B area nearby, and this restaurant had been strongly recommended by our fantastic hosts in the site near Shrewsbury. We tried to go Saturday night at about 6 PM, hoping to catch an early table. They were entirely booked out, a promising sign, actually, when combined with how good the food smelled and how heaving the pub was.

So we made reservations for the next night, Sunday, at 6 PM. It was my partner, our five year old, and myself, and the blonde older lady who took our reservations was gracious, but understandably harried by her roaring business.

When we arrived, it was much less crowded, and the reception was much less friendly.
On our arrival, the hostess (different from the night before, with longer and very dark hair) seated us in the remotest corner of the restaurant, along with another couple with a small child. This was not of itself bothersome, but then we were collectively ignored for over 15 minutes. No menu, no drinks order, nothing. And since this was far away from the flow of service, I had to actually walk into the other part of the restuarant and ask for a menu (given along with a visibly and strongly annoyed look by the seating hostess). Fifteen minutes later, a different waitress came to take our order, which took probably 25 minutes more to arrive (I was timing all this, by this point). The other table with a small child was equally poorly served. Most of the servers who came by were quite young, and often meant to be helpful, but were simply not seeing us at all.

When the food arrived, it was passable, but I was not impressed with the quality of the local rump steak that was there special (and the same hostess was somewhat affronted by my asking for the blue cheese and sauce on the side "So, you want a blob of melted cheese on your plate, then?"). BTW the not-melted blue cheese the chef kindly provided was outstanding.

So, I would say, go if you don't have expectations of good service, and are willing to wait for everything for some time. But do insist on sitting at a table in the main dining area, and be prepared to be not-very-British in asking for decent service.

Room Tip: Ask to be seating in the restaurant in the central, main dining area, not in a satellite area.

Stayed 1 night with my husband & parents to attend wedding at nearby Rowton Castle. Lovely very old 13th (or 14th century Inn). Julie who was bar tender, receptionist & waitress was fantastic, nothing was too much trouble! Equally the evening staff were very efficient even though the place was full to the rafters. Food was good. Rooms are fine although we had to juggle ours round a little as there were eaves in our bedroom & hubby is 6ft tall. I was worried that after a few beers he might crack his head on them! The courtesy bus to & from the venue was perfect & Mike was a star. He gave us his number to call when we were ready to go back to the Inn, great service. All in all a very nice stay. Have stayed in better rooms for the same price, but looking at the age of the place & the service, it was worth it!

Food was nice although the steak was a little well done for my liking apart from that it was faultless. Portions were a good size and quality was excellent. We did have to wait quite a long time for both our starters and main even though it was mid week and quiet. Staff were welcoming and polite. A lovely evening out.

We have just returned from a 3 night break at this pub. Our room was spacious and light and good value for what we paid. We thought the food was great and the menu choice was more 'select' than the usual pub-grub. Although we had a slightly long wait for dinner one evening - the staff were run off their feet so perfectly acceptable! All the staff were friendly and approachable and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Only negative to mar our trip - our room was above the side entrance. Unfortunately for us, a small group of 'noisy' overnight guests on some sort of reunion, gathered at this entrance and the intermittent loud cackling of a woman in the group, kept us awake for around two hours until gone 2am. You win some, you lose some..

Room Tip: Room 105 - nice & spacious with double aspect windows.

Had a lovely Sunday Lunch today, the roast lamb was delicious. But I was horrified at the price of a glass of wine!! £4.15 for a small glass!! Also never been asked to order my dessert before having my starter & main meal!
