“Perfect apartment in stunning location”
Reviewed July 24, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

This well equiped apartment in the pretty little town of Ratece close to the Italian border is the perfect place to stay for walking or just relaxing in Slovenia. The town of Ratece does have a perfectly good little shop and quite a few restuarants itself, but is only a short car journey to the larger town of Kranjska Gora for plenty more options for shops and activities. The views from the huge first floor balcony are just breathtaking - I had been a bit worried about being close to the road going in to Italy as I hate traffic noise (after looking at the location on Google satalite map), but I was pleasantly surprised that the road was not as busy as I had expected and it did not disturb me in the least. The beds were so comfortable that I always had a good night sleep - I usually hate double beds as some mattresses transmit every movement of your other half and keep you awake, but this one did not. The kitchen was well kitted out.The pool table and table tennis table in the basement, not forgetting the wi-fi connection, was perfect to keep the teenagers entertained so that I could enjoy the view from the balcony in peace! The management agency Think Slovenia provided an excellent service throughout; there was good communication and they were able to arrange our car hire. All in all I am very glad that we opted for this apartment rather that one in Kranjska Gora itself as the views from this apartment, the facilities and lack of hustle and noise really made this holiday extra special for me (we usually stay in the French Alps, but have been to Austrian Alps and French Pyrenees the last few summers). There were plenty of walking routes nearby or within a short drive to keep us happy for three weeks (with a few days off for swimming in the many lakes close by). We also enjoyed hiring bikes from Kranjska Gora, fantastic value at only 12 euros for the day each at the sports shop opposite the supermarket in the town centre, and cycling along the relatively flat disused railway line which has been converted into a cycle path (goes into Italy too) - great change for easing off tired walking legs. Slovenia itself was much more beautiful than I had expected (lots of handy trees for shade when walking when it is hot, an abundant variety of flowers and pretty, well kept villages) and the people are so friendly - well recommended!

“A real gem - at an affordable price”
Reviewed October 5, 2011 for a stay in June 2011

Our family of 4 adults - my wife & I and 25 year old twin sons spent 3 great nights in this little gem; tucked away in the mountainous region of north west Slovenia - within walking distance to the Italian border. Being in the middle of summer, the town of Ratece was relatively free of tourists - who no doubt flock to this area in colder months to visit the wonderful ski slopes in the surrounding mountains. Nevertheless, summertime brings its own magic and beauty to this region. Thus it was such a peaceful, beautiful little town to visit and use as a base to explore a variety of stunning attractions as far south as Lake Bled. To really explore the area, your own transport is a must.
Getting to Ratece is dead easy - good highways & roads all the way from the airport or Ljubljana.

Our self catering accommodation on the 1st floor met all our expectations. It was spacious (2 bedrooms (linen & towels provided), large living room / open plan kitchen/dining area leading to a lovely balcony for those evening sundowners whilst gazing up at the mountains!); spotless, had modern facilities - TV & DVD player, microwave, oven/hob - even a dishwashing and a clothes washing machine etc.
The dwelling's common basement had facilities for drying clothing and storing/drying ski gear), a playroom for children (for those days of inclement weather during winter), and for teenagers - a small pool table & table tennis.
The apartments are conveniently looked after by a pleasant family who live next door and who are always on call should there be anything amiss with your accommodation.
Vehicles are parked in the open, but securely on the property.

There are a few of good restaurants in the area and basic provisions are available from the local shop in the village. However, the nearby town of Kranjska Gora has well stocked shops, lots of restaurants, bars and is generally more geared towards the mainstream tourist needs.

Dan & Pia Bendall are your first point of contact if you wish to rent this accommodation. They are real estate agents, looking after a number of properties in Slovenia and they will manage the entire process of taking your deposit, concluding the rental agreement, pre-trip advice and coordinating your arrival with the 'on-site' manager etc. We found both to be extremely pleasant to deal with - most professional and helpful (e.g. they helped with my pre-trip car hire, maintained mobile phone contact during our stay etc).

All in all both the young and the old in our Family enjoyed our stay in a fantastic country and in particular, our stay at Villa Planina. We would also love to return to experience a similar visit during the winter months.
