Description: Zapatista is named in honor of Emiliano Zapata and all his faithful followers, which were called Zapatistas. During the Mexican Revolution early in the 20th century, Zapatistas fought for freedom, equal rights for fair wages and the opportunity to own their own land, much like the American colonists had fought for in the American Revolutionary War. Given the importance of Mexican culture in the United States, we found it necessary to tell this story through our restaurant. Zapatista is one of Chicago's best authentic Mexican restaurants. Favorite dishes include the made-to-order guacamole and the fajitas which are served sizzling hot in a molcajete or lave stone. The menu also boasts excellent steak and seafood dishes and a seemingly endless list of tequila choices. And our guests will love al fresco dining in late spring through early autumn, with our grand outdoor dining area on the sidewalk.

Came here on a Friday night, made a reservation on line but it wasn't necessary. The restaurant is huge and there was plenty of seating available. We arrived at 7:30 and when we left around 8:30 the place was almost empty. Certainly doesn't attract a late night crowd, perhaps because it is located in a shopping plaza.

The very best aspect of the restaurant is its service! Our waitress was fantastic. She was super friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. One thing that was a little weird was that they kept trying to clear our plates even before we had finished eating. Even the complementary chips and salsa that is usually left on the table until either the meal is finished or the chips have run out, they repeatedly tried to remove from the table. Odd

Unfortunately, they lose major points in terms of food taste and quality. I had the enchiladas de mariscos, flour tortillas stuffed with tilapia, sautéed shrimp, jumbo scallop, creamy chipotle salsa, One would think that a creamy chipolte salsa would be spicy and delicious but not so much. It mostly tasted like melted Velveeta without any kick at all. The husband had one of the the evening's specials, Tampiquena. This is a dish that we order often at Mexican restaurants so we are very familiar with it. It consists of a grilled skirt steak, one enchilada and rice and beans. The star of the dish should be the steak but here it was overcooked, tough and tasteless.

I really wish that I could recommend this place but I just can't on account of the poor food. To our waitress....please find another restaurant to serve at. We love your dedication, you just need to find really good food to please your clients with!

The atmosphere is wonderful - quaint and inviting inside and a lovely large outdoor dining area. The service was simply awful. The waitress had no sense of timing. Each time she approached our table, she would not wait for a pause in our conversation, but just burst in with whatever she wanted to say. This happened throughout the entire meal. The person bussing the table was equally obnoxious. She kept grabbing every individual item on the table that she thought we were done with. Se even tried to take away food that we weren't finished eating. No sense of timing. Between the two of them, I felt our whole meal was one constant interruption. The carnitas Ii ordered was too chewy. It's accompanying mole enchilada was very good, but smallish. The caramelized plantains ordered for desert were prepared hastily at table side. They did not taste caramelized, and when the vanilla ice cream was plopped into the mixture, it immediately melted so dessert was plantain soup! I would not return. It's unfortunate such a lovely building is going to waste. BTW - there were only a few tables filled during prime time on a Saturday night. Seems like a death knell.

The salsa here is excellent and so is the made to order guacamole. This place has actually improved from the last time we were here.

They are flexible and happy to accommodate any requests on the menu.

We've tried Zapatista twice - and were disappointed both times. Service was not good, food was not particularly good, atmosphere was not enjoyable. We won't try a third time.
