Owner description: Tribute to Mormon industry and vision. Glimpse of 1840's life in Illinois' 2nd largest city. Beautiful location on banks of the Mississippi. Restored homes and shops. Horse-drawn wagon rides. Pioneer craft demonstrations. Live entertainment. Free to the public. Open 365 days a year.

If you want good, clean, free family fun then this is the place for you, especially in the summertime. There are missionaries and a visitor's center and plenty of things to do. You can walk or take a wagon or carriage ride. There are live performances that are wonderful and entertaining. Get your tickets at the LDS visitor's center, but be aware they go fast.

Highlights: County Fair at 7 pm each night, Nightly pageant at 8:30 pm, Pioneer pastimes, and of course the rebuild Temple. The list goes on and on. Everything owned by the LDS Church is free.

If you at all inclined to have a spiritual experience then this is the place for you as the Spirit is strong throughout Historic Nauvoo.

Another option is to drive about 20 minutes to see Cathage Jail where Joseph and Hyrum Smith were martyred.

Drawbacks: Very little to no viable shopping, eating, or other entertainment options in Nauvoo. It is all very small town. We do those types of things 20 minutes up the road in Burlington, IA. Also, the toll bridge from Fort Madison, IA to Nauvoo dings you $2 to cross.

You can ride in a wagon or in a carriage or just walk. This is a village filled with history. Tours through the brick yard, blacksmith shop, gun shop, bakery and more. The grounds are beautiful and the Nauvoo LDS Temple awesome. Take the time to soak in what these people went through and how they came to Iowa and travelled on to Utah.

I've been to Nauvoo 20+ times! The weather can be all over the place so plan accordingly. No matter how hot it gets in the summer it cools off with a breeze off the river at night. Summer time can be a bit crazy with lots of tourists but it also offers the most entertainment. Off season is very peaceful and romantic. We like to come during the winter and watch the bald eagles along the river road. The attractions are seeped in Mormon history but if you are a non mormon don't let that keep you away. History buffs will love this place. I highly suggest all visitors call the visitor center run by the Lds church. Tickets to the plays, wagon rides, musicals, and performances are always free but some can be reserved 10 months in advance! Wagon rides can only be reserved the day of the ride but if you aren't there by 7:30 you probably won't get a ride. Also, the pageants are spectacular but people save seats! People rope off huge sections the night beforehand immediately after the performance. This can be very annoying and I think they shouldn't allow it but if you arrive 2 hours beforehand you will still sit way in the back. Also, the pre-show, the country fair, is loads of fun for kids. They have pioneer themed games, dancing and crafts. It's all free! They do have a reasonably priced concession stand. I recommend a jacket, bug spray and flashlight for the pageant. Also, cell service is spotty in Nauvoo so plan accordingly. Shopping is limited in Nauvoo. They have a tiny grocery store and two gas stations. In the summer there are several eating options but in the winter the pickings are slim. Always call ahead.

This is the second year that we have traveled to Historic Nauvoo to see the Pagent. This time we took 2 days so we could see more of the sights in Historic Nauvoo. During the day we walked around the buildings and went on the tours. It was great to learn so much about the area and history. Attending the pagent was our main focus. There is an old fashioned country faire before that was lots of fun. I loved the feeling that you get attending all of Nauvoo. Sometimes the crowd gets a little much for us. We found a bench and enjoyed watching all the people go by. You should take the time to really look around.
