“A Marvelous spot for traditional tapas”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

My husband and I tried Meson Sabika in the search for great tapas that wouldn't require us driving all the way downtown. This place did not disappoint! The grounds are gorgeous: a building that is clearly used for private parties was all dressed up for what appeared to be a corporate event. They have a private lot, that I'd imagine could easily hold all the cars, if there isn't a private event going on (I could see there potentially being a parking issue if both spaces are filled with diners). The restaurant itself has all sorts of cozy little tables spread throughout the beautiful mansion. We were dressed in date clothes, and felt dressed just right. Tapas are meant to be fun, so the whole experienced is relaxed, but still elegant.
We had an earlier reservation (5:30), so when we arrived, there weren't too many folks there yet. We were sat at a sweet little table near the window overlooking the garden patio. Because we were there so early, it was serene and easy to converse: I suspect that as the evening carries on and gets more crowded, it probably gets pretty noisy (but hey, it's tapas: it's part of the fun, right?). Our server was super-friendly and did a nice job of guiding us through the extensive and appetizing menu. A note: make sure to ask for the sangrias, since they are on a different menu than the rest of the items. They have a wide variety of hot and cold tapas, and they serve it all with some marinated olives and bread-and-butter. The Valenciana Pallella was delicious: each of the proteins were treated with great care, and the dish itself is gorgeous. Make sure to leave room for dessert, as their choices are worth saving some appetite space for! We were especially enamored with the Pear almond cake.
As far as prices, go, I'd imagine you could enjoy a lovely meal inexpensively, or you could go pretty much hog-wild, depending on how much you order: we ate our absolute fill complete with a whole shared pitcher of sangria, cold and hot tapas and desserts with coffee all for under $100. We hope to try a brunch here. We'd come back for sure.

Walk in the door, especially after dark you you are transported back in time in this wonderful space. Can be a bit busy on weekends, but great service and excellent choices for all courses will bring you back again.

“Food - good; service - meh”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

First of all, what kind of tapas restaurant makes you ASK for a list of sherries? Isn't that kind of a signature of tapas restaurants?

I hadn't been to Meson Sabika in several years. We went more frequently when we lived in Naperville, before the tapas craze got into full swing. Now, it's one of the few tapas places left in the suburbs. The food is good as it always was, but some of the small annoyances remain and others have appeared.

Hostess was somewhere between impersonal and professional. Didn't offer any information about a coat room (I assume that there was one because they had one in the past.) There were 2 of us and we were shown to one of the small tables. The group of 2 immediately after us got a table for 4, which would have been preferable because the tables are small and close together. Meson Sabika has a high noise level, but it is still possible to carry on a conversation, unlike many other restaurants. So, having a reservation may help you get a table, but not a good one.

We had menus and when the waiter showed up, he gave us a wine list, but it didn't have sherry and he said that he would have to go get another list for those. When I asked which ones were dry sherries, he said "they are Spanish sherries and they are all pretty dry." Well, there are variations in sherries, so that wasn't the response I was expecting!

We did order sherries, which took a while to appear. In the past, there was bread on the table shortly after you sat down. Now the bread appears with your first order evidently. And, we found out that one of us had a dinner menu and one of us had a lunch menu. And, we waited for what seemed to be a long time (around 15 minutes) between ordering and food arrival - even for the cold tapas. You do get a warning that the paella takes about 40 minutes, but nothing on the other courses.

I'd go again, just because the food is good and there aren't many tapas restaurants left. But, I'd make sure that I ate something before I went, so that I wouldn't get too peckish while I was waiting!

“Beautiful setting”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

The food and service at Meson Sabika are great. Good sangria. The setting is very nice in an old victorian home. Easy parking in large lot with none of the downtown Naperville parking hassle.
