“Chinese food, good classics your familiar with along with ones your not”
Reviewed November 25, 2011

Ok, this place has a good food for everyone. The Kung poa and general tso's are very good. Good sauce and pieces of garlic and ginger are seen. They also have great noodle and tofu dishes for those that like to try new items. You could eat here for many, many months and not have then same food 2x.

“Great, seemingly-authentic Chinese”
Reviewed October 14, 2011

I don't know if this place has any Americanized dishes like sweet and sour or the like, because we always order the namesake mapo tofu, the celebrated spicy beef noodle soup or another atypical (for America) dish. The flavors are unlike anything I've eaten before, heavy with oils, spices that linger, pickled vegetables and thick noodles. This is food worthy of Chinatown.

The waitresses are indeed no-nonsense and seem wary of white folks (like myself) ordering spicy food, knowing that it could be sent back to the kitchen. I'm a friend of the pepper so nothing has been intolerably spicy, but it has come close!

We brought a Taiwanese friend along and he was amazed, ordering more food to bring home with him to eat later.

Also, we used to enjoy Joy Yee's place nearby but their food quality has suffered, so we are glad to have a replacement.

“Craving spicy Asian?”
Reviewed September 11, 2011

Beware the mobile Yelp directions that tell you this place is on Rte 59 - it is not!!!
You get the feeling a place is going to be good when there are more Asian folks than not dining there. Mapo did not disappoint.. This was our 2nd visit and we will definitely be back. If you are craving spicy Asian food, this fits the bill, and at a really reasonable price. Stick with the noodle dishes that seem to be priced much lower than the usual (americanized) fare. We enjoyed the wontons in spicy chili garlicky oil, hot and sour soup, beef chow fun (deliciously browned wide rice noodles with vey tender beef) and don don noodles. This was a bowl of spaghetti like noodles in a spicy broth with ground pork, spinach and shredded black mushrooms. It was only $7.50 and I took half of it home. I also ordered the beef noodle soup to take to son who loves the spiciest food and even he found this challenging last time (I think it got spicier overnight!).
Service was efficient and pleasant. Not the greatest decor and a bit noisy with all the families with tots but we weren't there for atmosphere anyway. Wish we lived closer so I could get takeout too.

“Best Chinese Restaurant in Naperville”
Reviewed July 30, 2011

This is the best Chinese restaurant in Naperville, maybe the west suburbs. This is a restaurant that could easily compete with Chinese restaurants in Silicon Valley, Monterey Park, Flushing or other areas with great Chinese Cuisine. Lunch specials are great value. Most of the wait staff does not have great English skill, but don't confuse poor language skills with bad service. Beef Noodle Soup is a basic dish, but easy to mess up, but Mapo does not disappoint. Curiously, there signature Mapo Tofu dish is just all spicy, covering up most of the flavor, so I would steer you clear of it. Try their Beef Roll appetizer and the Fish Fillets in Black Bean Sauce.

“Bad Service!”
Reviewed June 21, 2011

The wait staff was rude and the food was not as good as before. I went last year and everyone was friendly and the food was awesome. WHAT HAPPENED??? The prices seem a bit higher than before and the place was not as clean. Our plates were dirty and the tea pot was gross.
