“Closed for the water problem again!”

Ramen Misoya Chicago
Restaurant details
Reviewed December 24, 2013

This ramen shop is the best in the area. However, there was a water pump problem today, Christmas eve, the restaurant was closed. We went there during Thanksgiving and the restaurant was closed due to water problem. I got a free Gyoza dumpling ticket again! When can I actually use it? I called at 11am to check if they are open at 11:30am. They said yes, and we drove there. it was very disappointed. They should have told me then.

Ramen Misoya is arguable the best authentic ramen shop in the Chicago suburbs. I first went with friends and was impressed. It was so good that I persuaded my ramen-doubting in-laws to give it a shot. And boyyyyy did they love it.

The ramen here is miso based. There are three main styles offered here -- Hokkaido (kome) , Kyoto (shiro), and Nagoya (mame) styles. Each is catered to different taste buds and each include a little twist of goodness. The kome's twist of goodness is fried potatoes, the shiro's is agedashi tofu, and the mame's is fried shrimp. At Misoya, I believe the kome is more renowned, but my favorite is definitely the mame. I've tried all three, so I'd rank them mame, kome, and then shiro. Within the three styles, you can generally choose between several versions -- basic, vegetable, cha-shu, and spicy. I usually get either the cha-shu or the basic (plus various toppings, of course).

Now, in dissecting each part of the traditional ramen...
* Broth is not the best, but it's still really good; the mame's broth is probably my favorite.
* Noodles are thick and hearty.
* Bamboo shoots are nice and chewy; the veggies are veggies.
* Cha-shu is AWESOME -- it's thick and juicy and definitely the best I've had at an American-based ramen shop.

In addition, I commend the appetizers. The gyoza definitely look and taste hand-made. The karaage chicken is tender, yet crispy.

That being said... I love Ramen Misoya!!
