Be sure to first stop at the visitor's center to get trail information, etc. After hiking we enjoyed their famous all-you-can-eat family style chicken at the beautiful historic lodge. Consider entering the park from Route 51 which takes you through the small scenic town of Makanda, population 500. This winding, up and down blacktop road sets up your park experience in a wonderful way.

This place is awesome. Big bluffs line the roads on both sides throughout the park. There is a lodge, campground, some great hiking trails, and the little town of Makanda, which has some quaint little shops, with a hidden garden behind them. Be sure to climb the Watertower near the lodge, to get a birdseye view for miles. You can pick out Bald Knob Cross from atop the tower platform. My favorite has to be the trails though.

The whole park is a mixture of valley meadows, majestic rock formations and bluffs, and hiking/riding trails. The lodge was build in the '30s by the WPA and it is spectacular. Good food at a reasonable price. Rooms and cabins are available, spend a few days and unwind.

Didn't have much time to spend in this park, but did get to hike a couple of the trails (Trillium Trail and Stonefort Trail). Very pretty trails with great views once you climb up the bluffs. Need to go back and explore more of the trails.

Spent one night in the campground (tent area). Tent area is avaialble first come / first served. I visited in November, so it was not crowded (only 5 sites were used). I don't think I'd want to stay here during the summer when it is busy. The tent sites are located in one large loop with no privacy between sites. Seems they randomly placed sites around the area.

Take some time while you're in the area to check out more of the Shawnee National Forest. It is a really pretty part of the state of IL.
