Day two of my Cumbria Way walk saw me settled at this iconic hotel in the heart of British climbing and walking culture. It is always a privilege to stay here and this visit was no exception. I had 'room 3' complete with private bathroom just a few steps away along the hall. Lovely clean room and a very comfortable bed were just what was needed after a long walk-in along the Langdale Valley. I ate in the residents bar on the night of arrival and then breakfast the following morning. Two very adequate meals served by the same very friendly young woman. Nothing spectacular but good basic food, and well up to standard.

The service is friendly but unprofessional. The breakfast is of good quality, the lunch isn't and diner is terribly bad. The facilities are grubby. Times long gone.

Brilliant old pub next to roaring fire and good service. In the middle of great scenery and hills and peacefulness.

We ate here as the pub next door had stopped serving food. We ordered the cumberland sausage and the gammon. Both came out within 10 minutes of ordering it which is always a bad thing. The gammon was undercooked and the sausage was of poor quality and tasted boiled. The presentation of both was basic. We were very hungry having been out all day but didnt bother with a dessert due to the standard of the main meal. Next time we will make sure we are on time for the pub next door. Staff are indifferent and not welcoming but we were not there for chit chat - we were hoping to get a good meal in an ideallic setting

We arrived just before evening meal but the chef had run out of all the steaks on the menu. We ordered haddock and scampi, which were fine, but by the time we ordered dessert the fish had run out too. A blueberry frangipan wasn't great though the sticky toffee pudding was ok. The staff seemed uninterested.
