“Very well done for a fairly small city.”
Reviewed August 5, 2012

We returned to Joliet for my high school band's Centennial Celebration. We visited the museum because their new display du jour (or for about a year maybe) covered the band's 100 years. That display was very good.

Beyond that, we were very pleasantly surprised at the coverage of the history of Joliet from the discovery days through developments of transportation, industry, culture and everyday life. Some displays included sound and some had movies with actors giving individual commentary and reminiscences.

A short (12 min?) movie provided a good introduction.

I grew up there in the 50s and 60s and have visited a number of times since, but there were a lot of things that I never knew about.

If you're at all interested in the development of an interesting small city with diversity in background and population, I recommend a visit.

Loved the experience, had a wonderful time and learned a lot in a short visit. The gift shop had everything and anything you could think of to purchase at good prices.

“A nice museum about Joliet history”
Reviewed April 17, 2012

Toured the museum with my daughter. It's not huge but has some very nice displays of Joliet history. My 6 year old seemed to like it and that's saying something! We spent about 2 hours looking around and shopping in the nice gift shop. The price is also very affordable.

“Entertaining house guests.”
Reviewed April 14, 2012

Places to take out of town guests are few and far between in this area. A trip to the Joliet Historical Museum was a very pleasant surprise. I enjoyed it just as much as our guests did.

“WELL WORTH A VISIT”
Reviewed March 27, 2012

My wife and I were very impressed with the Joliet Area Museum that is housed in the former Ottawa Street Methodist Church in downtown Joliet. The museum serves as an introduction to the many stories of the Joliet area and its’ people. The tour of the museum begins with an introductory film that presents a lot of interesting information, which is displayed in the museum’s exhibits. You will walk through a life-size model that portrays the building of the Illinois & Michigan Canal. Walk down a turn-of-the-century street past store fronts and you will be able to stroll into a few of them. There is a virtual ride on a replica trolley. You will find out about John Houbolt, a former NASA engineer who grew up in Joliet and his vital role in propelling and landing Astronauts on the moon. There is a mock-up of the Lunar Excursion Module and you can attempt to land the LEM on the moon’s surface. There are also touch-screen visuals and award-winning audio-visuals. Being able to examination the church’s stained glass windows up close from the third floor was enjoyable. The first floor contains the Route 66 Visitor Center that offers a variety of Route 66 travel information. There is a Resource and Discovery Room that offers activities for children. The lobby has a statue of the Blues Brothers to pose with and a photo booth where you can email a photo to your friends. Items with the Route 66 logo are available for sale in the gift shop. Free parking is available in the parking lot on the corner of Ottawa and Webster. The museum is a short walk from Harrah’s Casino. Allow at least an hour to enjoy this excellent museum.
