“Great food, no waiting for a table.”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

We live in Joliet, and we wanted to go out for a steak dinner this past weekend. We drove over by Louis-Joliet Mall, and Texas Roadhouse, Outback and Lone Star all had 45 minute waiting times. So we had heard of this Syl's Place, and we drove over to Rockdale, which is only a 10 minute drive from the mall area. We were seated immediately, and our waitress was great. She has worked there for 19 years. The salad was fresh and crisp, the filet mingon was so tender, the pasta was perfect, and the shrimps were HUGE. We even had the desserts, which were also very good. We spent $100 for dinner for 3 people. So, it costs a little more than those other chain restaurants, but was well worth it. Also, there is no loud music blaring, so you can actually hear eachother without shouting, like you have to at Texas Roadhouse. Very calming decor. The only bad thing I can say is that their ladies room wasn't real clean. We will be back for sure!

“A Classic.”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Very simply, no matter what you get here it is very good. Steaks, Chicken, Pime Rib and Fish are all very good. If you like Ribs with lots of sauce then this is the place for you because they are smothered in sauce and are great! Skip the appetizers as they tend to be a bit skimpy for the price.

“Steaks And Seafood Good. Reminescent Of A Old Supper Club”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

Dined at Syl's on a Wednesday evening. Appetizers of shrimp cocktail and oysters on the half shell. These were large size and fresh. Cocktail sauce pretty tame had to ask for more horseradish. Soup and salad were again fairly large portions with with tasty dressings but the beef barley soup was average. Entrees samples were deep fried shrimp, lobster, seafood pasta, ribeye and fillet. The steaks were prepared correctly but lacked a knockout beef flavor. Seafood was fresh and a lot of it. Portion size again large. Good but not great. Pasta done right. Twice baked not dried out and real mashed potatoes. Decent wine list with everything available by the glass. Waitstaff friendly but not the fastest. This is an older place that caters to the older crowd. I dine here one to two times a year and it is always consistent.

“Traditional food in a Rockdale”
Reviewed November 4, 2012 via mobile

We dined at Syl's on a Saturday evening without reservations. The menu has a nice menu of primarily steaks, seafood, and chicken. It's all pretty traditional food. I had prime rib, and my husband has some sort of sausage and pasta. Both were quite good, and the portion size very generous. The service was very good. The decor was a bit dated and some attention should be paid to the funky black chandeliers that are crooked and missing candles and the cheap side light fixtures that are also crooked. The books in the shelves were painted white with the titles written in ink. A nice restaurant should have stately decor and not cheap junk.

“Known for its steaks but don't miss the fried chicken”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

Syl's is a longtime Rockdale establishment and is best known for its steaks, but our favorite dish has become their fried chicken. Seafood is also delicious, especially the scrod. Pasta is also tasty (love their seafood pasta), and several are offered as a side dish instead of potato (try the aglio olio). Portions are generous, and modest portions are available.

Don't hesitate to ask your server about special menus such as the two dinners for a certain price (the hostess sometimes doesn't automatically bring those menus out). And, don't be afraid to ask for substitutions.

Bar is very well-stocked and a quiet place for a before- or after-dinner drink.

My only criticism is that the menu "is what it is". There are no nightly or weekly specials. I'd like to see some new offerings, especially in the seafood area.
