The Illiniwek Forest Preserve is a great place for camping, biking, picnicking, and fishing. Tent campers can pitch their tent about 20 feet from the Mississippi. A lock and dam is in full view from the campground. It is great fun to sit by a campfire and watch the barges and boats go by. There are about 20 sites for tents and about 50 for trailers/campers. The showers and bathrooms are kept pretty clean. The Great River Bike Path runs right through the middle of the campground. If you just want to picnic or bike, you can park your car and do that from this site. There are no fees for parking. The park is open from 8:00am to 10:00pm for non-campers. There are several restaurants, convenience stores, and gas stations close by in Hampton, Rapids City, and Port Byron. On the opposite of Highway 84, you will find the actual Forest Preserve. There is some very nice hiking. That side is all primitive.
