“Good place for family outing, but room for improvement”

KeyLime Cove Indoor Waterpark Resort
Reviewed March 22, 2008

The 3 of us (my husband and 11 year old son) spent 2 nights at KeyLime Cove checking in on Thursday and out on Saturday during the Easter holiday. Upon check-in it feels as though you are visiting an island resort. We stayed in one of the Mangrove Suites and had plenty of room for the 3 of us, Friday's maid service cleaned the room before 1pm which worked well for us. The water park is big, spacious, and clean. There was sufficient tables and chairs throughout the water park, and the layout of the area was nice, as well as a nice variety of activities to take advantage of. By looking at the parking lot both Thursday and Friday we knew the place was crowded, but because the floor plan is really spread out, the crowds seemed to be dispersed in a way that it didn't seem that crowded. There are a lot of free activities (cupcake decorating, dancing, animals brought in to pet) for the kids, including the arcade, which isn't free by fun. D.W. Anderson's restaurant has a cool ice cream parlor set-up and gives out free samples of ice cream and free popcorn. The wristband system is a great idea, especially with a child who is young, but wants some independence. It was nice not to have to keep up with a room key card. It would have been nice to have a safe in the room so we could leave our wallets, since the wristband system allows us to go cashless. On another note, the clock in in room displayed the wrong time when we arrived, and after my husband spent some time trying to correct it, he asked someone at the front desk if they knew how to reset the clock. We were told on Thursday that someone would come to our room, but no one showed up until Friday afternoon. It would also be nice if there was information in the rooms regarding what time breakfast is served. (The breakfast and resetting of the clock are very minor things, but can also make a big difference in how you enjoy your stay.) While there are a number of places to eat on the property, we had 2 not so great experiences We ate at The Crazy Toucan for dinner both Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, my husband had the bread pudding which he was looking forward to and thought it would be like the bread pudding served at Famous Dave's Restaurants (which was confirmed by our server), but when he received the cold bread pudding with a scoop of ice cream he was disappointed. The server offered to warm it, but even after this attemp, it wasn't the same. Friday's dinner was even more disappointed, it started with a server spilling water on the back of my husband's sweatshirt. Then the server took our orders, poured us water as we requested, and didn't return until after we had received and eaten our meals. When she returned, she was shocked that we had finished, as we proceeded to tell her another server brought our meals to us. It was also busy that night and it took approximately 30 minutes for our meals to arrive, and another 20 before our server returned to our table. We had to ask her to refill our water glasses when she returned with the check. It would have been nice if 1). on Thursday the server would not have charged for the bread pudding, and 2). on Friday the server had acknowledged her neglect of the table. (Little things make a big difference.) All in all we enjoyed the water park and our stay, and suspect with experience, these servers will get better, and clocks will be programmed better. Plus, my son is already planning our return during the summer with one of his cousins. It will be nice to load their individual wristbands with money to cover their daily expenses for lunch and the arcade, to give them a sense of independence.

We heard this resort had opened so we stopped by to see what all the fuss was about. We didn't stay overnight, just stopped there for dinner. We really weren't sure what to expect as some of these type of resorts are often really cheesy, but we were really impressed! The front lobby is amazing - you feel like you're in a tropical place. It evens smells tropical. There were a lot of neat places to sit and overlook the waterpark (which you can only use if you're a paying overnight guest) and the tropical music makes you feel like you're on vacation. There are a lot of neat little stores (we didn't go in them) and a huge confectionary area where you can buy all kinds of chocolates and candy. Next time we go back, we might just go for dessert! It's just feels like a neat little getaway, and the minute you step inside, you don't feel like you're in Gurnee! We actually had dinner at their diner-type restaurant called AW Andersons. It has burgers, fries, malts - that type of thing and a full soda fountain which is kind of neat. So, you can just go for icecream if you want. We checked out the spa but it was closed. It was all the way on the other side of the resort, and seems like an afterthought. Obviously, the main focus is the waterpark and lobby areas. We plan on going back soon and taking the nephew -- as there's also a full arcade that the kids will love.

Key Lime Cove Resort and Spa opened this weekend February 29th 2008. This was the most thought out plan of any hotel/waterpark that I've visited in a long time. It's brand new, but the staff and amenities were outstanding. The detail of the hotel was top notch. While there we met "Famous Dave" he is the most genuine person and personally gave us a tour of the guest rooms. He was so thrilled and it showed that he really cares about his staff and his hotel.

We happened to be in D.W. Anderson Ice Cream Parlor and stopped by our table for a nice chat. Granted this is opening weekend so everything was perfect but the staff was well trained and prepared.

This hotel is perfect for a short getaway, we felt like we were far away and took us away from all the stresses of everyday life.
