“5 Things To Know Before You Go…”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2011

The Hyatt Regency Curaçao is fabulous.

Here's 5 things you need to know:

1) The hotel is divided in to 2 wings. The "1" wing which is near the pool, beach, marina, dive shop, and water-sports place. The "2" wing which is near... I think the golf course. Make sure you stay in the "1" wing.

2) Both wings of the hotel are 3 floors, but the hotel is built in to a hill, so the floor numbering is weird. The 4th floor is the top. The 3rd floor which is on the ground floor in the back -- the lobby level. The 2nd floor which is on the ground floor facing the water. There is no 1st floor. (I'm sure it makes sense to someone.) Make sure you get a water facing room on the 3rd of 4th floor, especially if you like to sleep with the window open and feeling the breeze from the sea.

3) The beach is on a lagoon, not the ocean, and for some reason, there's a dock that runs the entire length of the beach. On the one hand, it's kind of useful if you have kids, it'll keep them from going too far in to the lagoon. On the other hand, it's really ugly and kind of kills the view.

4) It's a REALLY long drive to get to the hotel. About 45 minutes from the airport and 30 minutes from "downtown" Willemstad. It's really no big deal, because there's not much of a reason to leave the expansive hotel property.

5) There are 2 pools, an "activity pool" and a "lap pool". Get a chair with a cushion by the lap pool. The drunk people tend to lounge in the "activity pool" and get a bit loud in the PM, so if you want quiet in the afternoon, stick by the lap pool.

Here's 5 things you should do at the Hyatt Regency Curaçao:

1) Do go diving with Ocean Encounters. They're a great team. Ask to go "left" when you exit the lagoon... That seems to be the location of the best dive spots in the area. "Jelle's Jump" is a pretty impressive drift dive.

2) Do have the catch of the day at Shor. Ask Francis, the guy in the kitchen at the grill, how he recommends and just do what he says. Also, ask Alex, the bartender at Shor for that drink he invented for that lady.

3) Do stop by Bella Italia for a small gelato. They have fruit behind the counter, too, so get some fresh strawberry or banana cut up on top, too.

4) Do get a massage outdoors. The spa is pretty good and the massage area outside is fabulous!

5) Do watch the sunset from the great room while drinking a "welcome drink"...

What's the best about this hotel is the warmth and professionalism of the staff. Everyone is very attentive to your needs and they make an effort to get to know you. They would also show something of themselves, which made it more like staying with people you already know well. We felt very much at home.
We spend 4 days in this hotel. Spacious rooms with superb beds. All rooms are at the waterfront and have terraces or balconies. Very nice pool with poolbar, great cocktails and good lunch food. 2 more restaurants, a bar and a pizza place.
There is a big golf court but it's not at all a golf hotel. People of all sorts stayed here.

It was frustrating from the moment of our arrival. Bell service entered our rental car without us being present setting off the alarm. Insisted on moving our car before we had checked into the hotel. The guest service clerk ran credit card without telling us she was charging the full amount of our stay upon check in.

The tub shower combination was such a large step up that all the rooms have to be equipped with a special stool and safety bar. The only problem was the stool was missing in our room and it took them two days to find one. We wanted to order room service after traveling for more than 12 hours, but the in room dining menu was missing from the guest services book. We called the front desk and the guest service clerk said one would be delivered to our room right away, but 30 minutes later we were still waiting. We went to the front desk and were sent to the main level restaurant. No one had a menu so we had to sit in the restaurant and order some food. Jacqueline the ONLY bright spot of service and professionalism on our trip did a wonderful job of serving us that evening.

Our room remained untouched by housekeeping until after 4 pm when we had to call the front desk to arrange for service. The room was never consistently serviced. Nothing was restocked without request. Nicky the SWIM waiter charged us for multiple sodas on our lunch bill instead of honoring the hotel's free refill policy. We had to ask that it be taken off our bill. The breakfast in MEDI was poor. Rubber eggs, uncooked pancakes, and over cooked waffles were standard. Any time you wanted a check you had to ask when your food came or you could sit there for at least thirty minutes or longer before seeing your wait staff member. The only redeeming service venue was SHOR and it is the high end and pricey restaurant on the property.

We attempted to discuss the service issues with the hotel manager Jeff. Made several calls without being able to contact him so we left a voice mail. Did not get a return call from him until 48 hours later. Rebecca a supervisor was just as unhelpful. After a face to face discussion with her, she sent a bottle of wine with no wine opener and stale crackers with cheese to our room. Just made us more frustrated. We left the unopened bottle of wine in our room when we departed today.

These are just of the few poor service highlights of our stay. They were only at about 30% capacity so who knows what would happen if the property was actually humming with guests. Hyatt guests all over were complaining of the service. You heard it out by the pool, in town, on boat excursions, and even in the hotel lobby. I can't figure out if they cannot hear or why they don't want to listen. I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone for any reason.

I love the Hyatt Scottsdale Arizona, but may quit patronizing all Hyatt properties after this experience.

My fiance and I stayed at this hotel at the end of our trip, and it was absolutely perfect. The views and property were GORGEOUS ... but it's worth mentioning that this hotel is all the way on the east side of the island, about 25-30 mins drive from Willemstad ... so if you're going to stay here, you should definitely rent a car and be prepared to drive if you want to see the island. That being said, this hotel was definitely a property that you could spend an entire vacation at without ever leaving -- there was a gorgeous golf course, great pools, several restaurants, beaches, watersports, etc etc. As a side note: one of the awesome things about the Hyatt's Medi bar/restaurant was that they have live music until 11pm on weekends. On the downside, if you have kids or want to go to sleep before 11pm, you're almost definitely not going to be able to sleep unless you're in a coma.

What a gorgeous place!!! The architecture is awesome as is the quality of building materials. There is a spectacular open air lobby with great views of the pool and all the beautiful surrounding area.
Getting to the Hyatt in a rental card at night is not a pleasant experience. The directions include things like "turn left at the roundabout when you see a colorful building on your right!!!"At night you can see little, including the unlit road signs. "Once you pass the Juliana bridge go 3 miles ---- Pass actually means cross the bridge!! We got totally lost and the 35 minute trip became a 90 minute adventure. The signs that look like U turns have no slash through them but in actuality mean NO U turn!! This means we took at least 4 illegal U turns on the way there. On Saturday night the entire island is partying and there are no sober drivers on the road except for us frightened tourists. The folks we asked for directions were all very nice but also very sloshed. It is like a third world country on initial impression--no open gas stations and certainly no 7/11 type food marts where one could ask for directions. On the way we did find one McDonalds and one KFC--both were totally packed with people.
Buying gasoline (only do it in the daylight) was an experience. You have to see a caged cashier and prepay in cash. They do not accept credit cards--only Maestro M-card, whatever that is. Happily they do take dollars, but expect guilders for change at a poor rate.
We loved our stay at the Hyatt. We had requested a "premium" water view room and asked for a quiet one. We had a top floor corner room towards the end of the West Wing--superb view to include the ocean, the inlet (Spanish Waters) the beach and even part of the main island to the right. We heard no noise whatsoever other than some boats going through to the pass.
The beach is narrow and long with plenty of chairs--there are restrooms and shower and a towel supply nearby. Great drink and even food service all along the beach. Just how spoiled can one get? The pool is large and clean with plenty of chairs to include both sun and shade. Great service.
The hotel seemed perhaps 2/3 full at best. About 2/3 of the guests seemed European, mostly Dutch. We did hear horror stories of constant rain during December with lots of mosquitos in the open air dining rooms, so I sure would avoid the rainy season. We also heard it was very hot with no ocean breeze during August and into September. Our 8 days at the end of Jan. were gorgeous with only 2 showers that lasted 15 minutes each. The temp was 78 to 84 all week!!
The restaurants were inconsistent. The Shor is the place to go at 6:30 for the sunset--we ate there 4 times--2 excellent meals and 2 mediocre to downright lousy ones--did the chef quit or go on vacation we wondered. The Medi has a weird menu--everything from pizza to rack of lamb. The breakfast buffet is the same every day and is pretty good, though I wish they knew how to make an omelet properly.
Service was strange--there were way too many servers at both restaurants, yet noone seemed to know what they were doing. English is spoken but I think noone understands the American mentality and communication is a problem. The 15% resort tip does not go to the server acc. to the concierge (one of 4 that week) I spoke to. Any tip you add goes into a tip pool for the entire staff---so if you want to really reward good service it is nice to bring some cash and give it to them directly. (or not)
The hotel lobby has tea at 3pm--we never made it. They also have cocktails and wine for sale beginning at 5pm. We really enjoyed our server from the Phillipenes named something like "Easel" (sp?). She is a terrific person and we got to know her during our 8 day stay.
There were 2 great bands for listening and dancing outside the Medi on Friday and Sat. evenings.
The spa couples 1 hour "Stemp" massages were fantastic!!!
The sunset cruise arranged through Ocean Encounters was wonderful--we had only 20 people on a very large catamaran--saw lots of flying fish--drank all the wine and beer we wanted and enjoyed the champagne at sunset. Recommend highly!!
Our only minor negative was the housekeeping service. They changed the sheets and towels but did nothing else--no vacuuming (lots of dustballs) and no replenishing of coffee or milk. Also change on the nightstand mysteriously disappeared--a tip before checkout? These were minor items and did not affect our fabulous week---it sure seemed like a repeat honeymoon.
This is the place for pure vacation--put cell phones in the safe, bring no laptops or iPads, bring reading material and plenty of sunscreen. Enjoy life!!

Negatives:
About 45 minute ride from the airport on rather poor roads with very few signs, easy to lose way. The hotel arranged shuttle was fine for getting to town or airport. Bring your Blackberry or similar to communicate because they charge by the minute to use their computer, plus an internet service charge of $15.75 per day.
Positives:
After a week and a half we were impressed by:
The staff at the resort including the golf course, dining facilities, main desk, Ocean Encounters, beach were some of the most helpful friendly people we've ever encountered. Room was very nice and the bed was excellent having a refrigerator was great. Easy access to a beach right outside our room was fabulous I especially enjoyed having the shade trees and awnings as I could spend the whole day out there without getting sunburned. Don't miss dining at Shor resturant we thought it was the best.
The water temperature at the beach was perfect. Snorkling was great, rented a Hobie for sailing on Spanish Waters and the golfing was excellent. An excellent choice if you want to relax get on island time and really get away from it all.

We stayed for 7 nights at the Hyatt while in Curacao for vacation. Got this hotel at extremely cheap per night through expedia unpublished rates and had high expectations coming in as it was #2 on tripadvisor at the time. Demographics: Couple in mid 20’s, this would be our fourth resort visited. First time to Curacao and did not rent a car. This is a long review and suited for meticulous vacation planners. Scroll to the end for recommendations if you do not want to read the entire review.

Transportation: There is an option for the Hyatt to arrange transportation for you from the airport to the resort for a price of 30 USD pp round trip. This is an extremely good deal if you are not renting a car as a one way taxi to the resort can be upwards of 60-70 USD one way. I arranged this by directly calling the hotel. On our arrival, the individual picking us up was not there (because our flight was delayed). We called the hotel again, and they were able to get in contact with the driver and got him to us in acceptable time. We were unable to check in at the airport as there was no agent there at the counter. The ride to the resort takes about 45 minutes. (4/5)

Initial Impression: Upon entering the grounds of the Santa Barbara plantation where the resort is located, there is still an eight minute drive to the resort entrance. The resort itself is visually spectacular and the lobby has an open air concept. As far as the appearance of the property, it is second to none. This is a new resort and it shows. All the staff from the bellboys to the front desk were welcoming and made the check in process smooth. We were upgraded to a partial ocean view (which is really a lagoon view) and were served a drink for refreshment. The whole process certainly exceeded my expectations from that standpoint. (5/5)

Room: We were upgraded to a partial ocean view room that was located at the end of the resort. The structure of the resort is two wings connected by the lobby. There are three floors of rooms. The walk to our room at one end of the resort was long, it takes about five minutes. They have employees on golf carts that can transport you from your room to the lobby if needed. The room itself was beautiful and immaculately clean. This was a room with a king size bed and an OPEN SHOWER concept. This means that whoever is in the room with you can see you in the shower if they simply walk by it. No problem for couples; however, it could make for an awkward moment if you are not traveling with a significant other. There were bathrobes available and an ipod docking station that we utilized to its fullest. The TV was functional albeit the selection of channels limited. There is a safe as well as basic bathroom amenities. The view we had was less than spectacular and not really a partial ocean view unless you consider a small lagoon part of the ocean. We had some issues with noises in our room. The first day we were there, there was a boat docked right outside our room BLASTING their music. This made for an uncomfortable initial day where we wanted to sleep off our flight. There was never a problem with this again and might have been an isolated occurrence; however, there is a noise that occurs daily at approximately 8-9am that sounds like construction. It wakes you up for a few seconds on end when it gets close to your room so if you have trouble falling back asleep this may be a problem. Also, you can hear the toilets flushing from the upstairs room (not a problem I guess if you are on the top floor). The cleaning staff do a good job and the only problem we encountered is that some of the pillows do have a foul odour on them that is simply not alleviated from changing pillow cases. There are electric outlet adapters in place for NA equipped devices. Wireless internet costs 15 USD per 24 hours.

Resort: The resort itself is beautiful and has two pools, one beach (with associated beach chairs at both), free towel service and 3 restaurants. There is also a brand name clothing shop, beach store, jeweller, perfume shop, convenience store (selling ice cream) and business center. The lobby is built with an open air concept and has an associated bar and couches throughout. A nice area to relax at night. The pool is likely the best thing at the resort and pool chairs were never difficult to find. There are two pools, quite basic in design but water temperature was perfect and the general area was very well equipped. There are servers that bring you food and drinks on request and therefore you never have to leave your seat. The beach, like everyone has previously mentioned, is lacklustre. There is a walkway that separates the private swimming area and the rest of the waters (likely to prevent collisions from motorized vehicles and swimmers). The water is not the traditional picturesque turquoise water that is classically associated with the Caribbean; it is more of a lake blue. The sand is not great and is quite rocky at points. There are also rocky portions in the water and you have to look for areas that are not rocky. Once again, beach chairs in abundance and servers everywhere. A net is also set up for beach volleyball which I did not witness anyone utilize. In the end, it is the pool that saves the lack of a real beach and the resort itself separated from this is a functional and aesthetically pleasing property. Pool (5/5), Beach (1/5), Resort (4/5).

Restaurants: The three restaurants located on the premises are SHOR, Medi and the Swim Bar. SHOR is the epitome of culinary excellence. The food there is certainly one of the best American style restaurants I have ever dined at. Yes, it is expensive with a meal that is at a minimum 80 USD if you are conservative in what you order; however, the food, service and view of the Caribbean sea are all top notch. Dined here for lunch and dinner four times and only once when it got real busy did the service lack behind. The rest of the experience at this restaurant was fantastic. In contrast, Medi was an entirely different beast. The food here was average at best, sometimes way below average. The prices are a little bit cheaper with normal lunches and dinners running around the 50 USD mark. The service is also poor with the wait staff standing around instead of refilling waters. The dining area is well designed and the outside seating provides a comfortable environment for dinner. Lastly, the Swim Bar is a good place for lunch or your occasional snack. The food is still expensive but manageable and the quality is what you would expect from a snack bar (neither spectacular or abysmal). Service here is attentive; however, be prepared to wait for your food. Pizza is also sold at Bella Italiana, the convenience store located next to Medi. Notable omissions include an Asian restaurant and local Caribbean fare. SHOR (5/5), Medi (2/5), Swim Bar (3/5)

Service: The service at the resort varied with respect to where you were. The front desk, activities desk and everyone in the main lobby were spectacular and top notch. Always smiling and upbeat, these were individuals who definitely embraced their roles as ambassadors for their resort. The pool and beach staff were attentive, however, a little less approachable. The wait staff at Medi were abysmal, the wait staff at SHOR were fantastic. One notable thing about this resort is that there is a 15% resort service charge tacked on to everything. That means, regardless of the service you receive, the minimum tip you provide is 15%. The thing that the two of us noticed was that you are etched in the memory of the wait staff. The service subsequently rendered after the initial encounter was entirely dependent on the “extra” tip you left them last time. This certainly leaves a bad taste in your mouth and most definitely does not make you want to leave them any more money. (4/5)

Activities and Amenities: The Hyatt does arrange daily activities for children and adults alike. I did not witness or engage in many of these supposed activities but they are available. Some of the ones I saw on the board were beach volleyball, bowling, and sunset pictures. There is an oceans encounters activity center located next to the resort that specializes in motorized water sports and diving. Did not go there but prices looked reasonable. There is a spa on property which we never utilized because of its price compared to other spas on the island. Gym is on site and very modern with lots of equipment. Also, tennis and a beautiful golf course are also located on property. (Can’t rate it, due to not participating in many of these activites).

Location: Like previously mentioned in other reviews, this resort is ISOLATED. It is about 30 minutes by drive outside of Willemstad and 45 minutes from the airport. Luckily, there is a resort arranged shuttle bus that leaves Mon, Wed, Fri from 8:30am to Willemstad and returns at 2:00pm. It is 12 USD per person round trip. Admittedly, this prevents any exploration of the nightlife of Willemstad if only traveling by shuttle. This shuttle is actually organized through a third party company and we did have issues with the pick up as we were left out to dry for 45 minutes in Willemstad waiting to return to the hotel. Although not the Hyatt’s fault, they did take responsibility and did not charge us for the trip and also provided a free amenity in the room. Another excellent example of what guest relations and the front desk can do to enhance your stay. We did utilize a cab to different locations on the island and it is very expensive. Therefore, if at all possible, I would definitely recommend renting a car if you are planning to explore the island. (2/5)

Overall Impression and Recommendations: This is a beautiful resort situated far from most of the other things on the island including Willemstad. The pool and relaxing nature of the resort are definitely its strong points whereas the beach and the location are the drawbacks. Service is varied depending on where you are, but guest relations certainly do try to make your stay memorable. Transportation to and from airport and Willemstad is arranged through a third party company by the Hyatt and definitely reduces the amount you spend on traveling. Food is great at the SHOR, and average at Medi and the Swim Bar. Activities are there for your pleasure if you so desire to engage in them. Room is great; however, an open shower concept does compromise your privacy if you are not traveling with a significant other. I would recommend this hotel on certain conditions:
1) If you are renting a car for your stay, this is a great resort as it provides relaxation and you are still able to drive to a real beach if you desire
2) If you are splitting your stay, then a visit to the Hyatt is definitely in order (3 nights is enough)
3) If all you want to do is relax and you could care less about exploring beaches and other things on the island, then the Hyatt should be near the top of your list

In the end, we did have a great time and enjoyed our stay in Curacao and the Hyatt. If we return to Curacao in the future, it will definitely be a split stay and the Hyatt will definitely come in to play when deciding on accommodations.
