“Annual Pilgrimage”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

Once a year, during late summer but before Labor Day, my wife and I make our trek to St.Louis to visit relatives. The highlight of the trip, for both of us, starts with the drive from St.Louis to Pere Marquette Lodge in Grafton, Illinois. The view of the barges and boats on the river are a real thrill once a year. We have part of the morning and the rest of the day to walk the grounds, do a bit of exploring, and remember the "good 'ol days".

An early bird signature fried chicken dinner, recognized in St.Louis as the best, usually is had by 4pm. This is followed by viewing nature at its best from the chairs and tables off the back lawn. Then off to our room at the lodge. We wake up to a very hearty breakfast of eggs, potatoes, coffee, etc. the next morning to prepare for a day of apple knocking at nearby Eckert Farms. If we sound like a couple of "old farts", well...we are.

Room Tip: All rooms in the newest wing of the main lodge are our preferance.

Spent the weekend at the lodge for my Mother-in-laws 75th birthday. There were over 20 of us that spent 1-2 nights there. They were very helpful and accomodating. The last night we had a banquet room for dinner for around 34 people. They prepared a very good Italian buffet for us. I was impressed with how good the food was. We all had buffet breakfast in the restaurant and it was very good. A large selection of hot breakfast foods along with danish, bagels, croissants and fresh food. Would do the breakfast buffet again. I did not eat in the restaurant off the menu. Someone else told me what the had was not as good off the menu as the buffet breakfast was. I would recommend this place for any kind of a get together you may want. Reunion, wedding reception, birthday party ets.

I stayed with my family of four at Pere Marquette State Park about a week ago. The experience was decent. I liked the resturant and the visitors center was very nice. As for the lodge/main building, it was your typical, average state park lodge. When we called to make a reservation (it was maybe five-ish days in advance) all the rooms that were the size we needed (two double beds) were taken. So we didn't really have a choice but to stay in a cabin (which wasn't private, but connected with one or two others). We would have rather stayed in the lodge, but the cabins were fine with us. The first night we were there we had noisy neighbors but luckily they left the next day and then it was quiet. The cabin was nice. It was a good size. I liked that there was a little sitting area off to the side of the room by the door with a couch and a couple of chairs (I prefer to sit in an actual chair, rather a bed). The only thing I have complain about is the insects that were inhabiting our room. There were mosquito's that we were up swatting at all night. Just when we thought we had killed them off more would show up the next night. And we actually had a wasp in our room too that my dad shooed out the door. We determined that they must have been coming in through a vent somewhere. If it hadn't been for the bugs we would have had a very nice time.

Room Tip: Try to avoid staying in a cabin unless you like getting bit up by mosquito's.

We were the only ones in the restaurant around 3:20pm. We were seated and I went to take my son to the restroom when we got back the food was already there. I thought to myself wow they cooked that chicken really fast. We began eating and noticed the green beans were cold and the chicken didn't taste like it was just cooked. We asked for to go boxes and let the supervisor know we didn't enjoy our meal. She told us the chicken was just cooked right before we got there and she admitted the green beans were old and she didn't know why they didn't cook some fresh ones. After saying that she just walked off and we paid the bill. We soon return and ask for some type of discount because they knew they were serving us old food. They offered to give us two of the dinners off. We won't return

Our family has stayed @ this rustic lodge & cabins several times & love it. The cabins or lodge rooms are both roomy and clean. Stay here only if you'd like a large lodge fireplace, huge chess board, stone & wood plank flooring, detailed tapestries, beautiful trees, clean indoor pool, peace and quiet. The resturant is excellent, with a sunday brunch to die for. Best prime rib and catfish we have ever had.

Room Tip: Call ahead to make sure there is not a wedding planned when you are staying there. We were banned fr...

I won't be redundant and repeat what has already been said about this being a good, out-of-the-way place to stay. I definitely don't agree with the assessment down thread about the food and service of the restaurant. Our experience was wonderful. The food (a fruit combo salad for Spouse/chicken dish for me) was very good, the waitress attentive. She seated us at a window and drew our attention to the hummingbird feeders right outside. We enjoyed watching the hummers buzzing around and even dawdled after eating until it became dark and we couldn't see them anymore.

A couple of downsides: if you can't get by without fast service on your computer you're going to be sunk. The wifi didn't reach our cabin and is not the least fast, sitting in the main lodge. So, any updates to Facebook about your stay will have to wait, or you'll have to be very patient about them loading. Television reception is poor in the cabins as well. Not that either of those issues were critical to us, we were there for several days of relaxation, not being wired.

A more annoying issue were the bikers. Grafton has become a biker town (mind, we are riders ourselves). Even though the road is at a distance from the lodge, the riders with loud pipes can be heard. Weekends seem to be the worst; we tried to drive down to Grafton to see about eating out on Saturday and ended up going back to the lodge. On weekdays it quiets down.

We would definitely return to this place. Pere Marquette is an excellent spot to unwind. Just sitting on the patio in the evening, watching for the occasional barge to pass by, we completely forgot about the stressful jobs and responsibilities waiting for us after our week's vacation was ended.

This was our first trip to this state park so we opted to stay in the Lodge on the property. We traveled Sunday thru Wednesday and were glad we did, as the staff told us they are busiest Wednesday thru Sunday. We had a very quiet time enjoying the facilities and surrounding area. We stayed in the new wing of the lodge. It did appear the old wing was in need of some maintenance work such as painting, carpet cleaning etc. Our room was huge, clean and quiet. Microwaves and refrigerators are not included w/the rooms, but a refrigerator can be rented for a small daily fee. We opted to keep an iced cooler in the room. It worked fine. There are no irons/ironing boards in the rooms. Breakfast is not included with your room either but the on-property restaurant won't disappoint you. They are open for B/L/D. There are selections to satisfy all tastes and it was good! The heated indoor pool and whirlpool are large and clean. We enjoyed quiet time each day in the 'Great Room' located in the center of the lodge. We also enjoyed time each evening on the outside veranda which overlooks the Illinois river. We were able to ride the roads and enjoy the scenery within the park as well as explore some of the surrounding area such as Grafton and Alton. After that, it was a short ferry ride across the river to historic St Charles, Missouri. I'm not sure small children would enjoy the park as it didn't appear the park nor the immediate surrounding areas had much to offer them but all in all we thought it was a very relaxing, quiet place to visit and will definitely make another trip there.
