“We Shall Return”
Reviewed December 14, 2011

For our anniversary and husband's birthday we returned to the beautiful Pere Marquette Lodge. Our first contact was lovely Rose at the front desk, who greeted us warmly with the smile of an angel. Our spacious room was clean and the bed so comfortable, you felt as if you were sinking in a big cloud. Supper in the goregous dinning room in front of the immense fireplace, was great and our waitress, Crystal was so attentive and friendly. My husband enjoyed the succulent fried chicken and I ordered the French onion soup, that is like a first kiss; UNFORGETTABLE. We had such a great time, and I got some beautiful gifts at the craft fair. Our last meal was breakfast and our waitress Amy was a delight. She was so much fun, and we really enjoyed her gift of laughter to us. We hated to leave but before we left,we made reservations for next year with a gracious and beautiful Raynae at the front desk. We thank them all for making us feel so special and we highly recommend this beautiful place and wonderful staff. Carol and Jerry.....Decatur Il.

Room Tip: Our room was on second floor, but they are all beautiful accommodations.

Our room was not pleasant at all. It was so warm sleeping that you couldn't fall asleep, and if you finally did get to sleep you would be woke up constantly from the hallway doors slamming every few minutes and it even got worse around 6:00 a.m. At check out I shared my unhppiness with te frint desk, they could have cared less! They also are very out dated, for the price $ 179.00 What a RIP OFF

Room Tip: Room 100 is hot and very noisy!

We have stayed at this Lodge around 4-5 times. We always have a good time. We have a 2 daughters who are 6 and 1 year(s) old, and have always had them with us when we've stayed. As other reviews have suggestd, this is a state park lodge. It is a blend of rustic and modern, but certainly not luxury. However, with everything to do in the area, I doubt you'll be spending much time in your room. Having traveled extensively around the world, and have stayed in all sorts of lodgings, what is important is cleanliness of the rooms/hotel/inn. Our rooms have always been clean; the bathtubs can be iffy (and if you have small children, that can be an issue) as some of them look as though they need a good, hard scrubbing. Otherwise, our rooms have always been clean. If the rooms were updated, they might seem cleaner, but try not to confuse old with dirty. The pool situation has been hit or miss. The water tends to be on the cold side (okay, turn your lips and fingernails blue kinda cold), which is kind of a bummer, especially to excited children who want to swim; they jump in, swim for 5 minutes and then they're out. The hot tub has always looked no less than nasty-dirty (think used bandaids, cigarette butts), and we've never used it. We have stepped into the wine room, just to look, and as we did, we got the evil eye from the woman attending the wine bar because we had our daughter's with us. When I said that we were just peeking in, she glared at us until we left. I was going to send my husband in to get us glasses of wine, but after her rude demeanor, we decided not to. We've eaten at the restaurant, and have sampled the menu. The friend chicken is to die for and, served family style, the sides are generous (and the servers will bring you more if you run out). The other entrees are good, but not great (we'd prefer to eat in Grafton somewhere). We've had the weekend breakfast/brunch buffet, which is inexpensive and really good. One morning in the restaurant, the server who seated us warned us that they were understaffed and had many large groups of guests eating, so it might take them awhile. Being there with 2 hungry children, my husband and I debated about leaving and going elsewhere, but we decided to stay. A customer began yelling at his server who, in turn and out of anger, hit the "please wait to be seated" sign and knocked it over. It was extremely unprofessional, and having the girls with me, it was disconcerting. But, having stayed there many times, this was the only problem we've experienced in the restaurant. We always hang out in the Great Room in the evenings playing games and having a wonderful time. If you are going with children, I suggest going with another set of friends who have children as well (easier said than done, I know). That way, the kids can play board games together and the adults can relax with a glass of wine or beer by the fire in the Great Room. We live in St Louis and the Lodge is only 50 minutes from our house. It feels like we've gotten away, but yet we're not far at all. We've stayed at our IL/IN state park lodges, and this is one of our favorites. We plan on spending some of the holidays at Pere Marquette Lodge. I can't stress enough that this is a park lodge, not a chain hotel. The windows, on the outside, have spiderwebs on them and such, but I don't mind as we are in a large, beautiful park. We always look forward to going to this Inn, even with all of its quirks.

Went to Pere Marquette Lodge for lunch with my family on Labor day. At just 1pm in the afternoon they were already out of mushroom burgers which was a big problem for the vegetarian in our party because they had no other vegetarian entrees. The place was only maybe 1/3 full but service was incredibly slow; it took ~40min just to get bread. The waiter seemed was definitely uncomfortable and seemed to be avoiding us. When I did manage to flag him down he made the excuse that the kitchen was still baking our bread.

Whether or not it was true, our experience was terrible. When service is that slow, the only two things I want to hear are "We're very sorry" and maybe "Can I interest you in a round of drinks on the house?". The waitstaff should be trying to make us comfortable, not covering their own [---].

I was on a group tour and was given room 113 in the main lodge. Its a good size room with two double beds, a table with two chairs and a dresser. Though there was lots of room for a desk, there was none. It was very comfortable for one night, though the most I would want to stay here is two nights. There is good lighting with 4 lamps and the towels were in very good shape.

I always do a safety check on windows when staying on a ground floor. These windows also have a latch at the top of the window which makes it extra secure. You might have to stand on one of the chairs to adjust it.

There is good security in the lodge, as your room key is needed to enter the hall and as well as all outside doors, except for the main entrance.

Note that there is poor cell reception here and the front desk said “it is a problem.”

This is a lovely, traditional park lodge and I would stay here again.

Room Tip: If you stay at the lodge, select a room on the second floor (there are only two floors), so you can k...

Pere Marquette Lodge and cabins are the perfect get away for a rustic, romantic weekend. These state park accommodations are located on beautiful grounds. I have stayed in the lodge...both the older and newer parts. We prefer the older section away from the noise of the pool and winery. Actually, we love staying in the cabins over the lodge for the intimacy of the privacy they offer. Remember...this is a state park...not a 5 star big-city hotel, so expect that...not a bell boy or butler. The cabins and lodge have the usual amenities, and our rooms have always been clean. The restaurant is good - breakfast buffet on Sundays has very good bacon and a kind of beef hash. The winery is quaint with a very friendly wine hostess who treated us very well on our anniversary weekend.
We always look forward to a quiet, relaxing time when we stay at Pere Marquette!

Room Tip: Cabins and the older part of the lodge have the quiet rooms.

We were just passing through this pass Labor Day Weekend and our wonderful bed and breakfast hostess suggested dinner at the beautiful Pere Marquette Lodge's resturant. The place we wanted to set because of the privacy was not open, but the hostess set us there anyway and sent a waitress right over. She was a sweet, young, blond women and was very attentive to all our needs. The food was delicious and I highly recommend the fabulous French Onion Soup. The Chicken Tenders were sooo tender and light as a feather. My husband's fried chicken was wonderful and so generous with their portions. We will return. Carol and Jerry...Decatur, Il.
