We had earned a room for free with Best Western due to using Best Western on our trip through the west. We were in Galena on a family trip and decided to use our free night on the last night in Galena. The rooms were ok, but were more like a motel than a hotel. The pool room was way too hot and the breakfast was not too good. The eggs are absolutley horrible. The people customer service is excellent though. The bed was horrible, I woke up and could barely move.

Room Tip: Request a room in the back facing the woods.

Great location and easy to get in and out of this busy little town. There is a wonderful restaurant & bar in the strip mall next door! The desk clerk was very friendly and had lots of ideas for us to go do and see.

Room Tip: They also have rooms here that have themes to them......we will be trying one of those out next time...

We stayed six nights here in late September, 2012--first time in the Galena area. I booked it from reviewing internet options and comparing prices with places in the downtown. We prefer a hotel instead of a B and B and also wanted a place which would allow us to bike into the town. Well, we didn't know the hills were there, but the daily walk into Galena for shopping and dinner became one of the highlights of our vacation! The views from the area of Grant's home just down the street are fabulous. We were very happy with our stay. Sure, the hall carpets show some wear and the breakfast was high in carb choices, but if you looked around, you could eat an apple, orange and have some yogurt. The coffee bar was kept going all day. The rooms are extra large with a very nice sitting area. The balcony became an extension of our room and we enjoyed that space very much. The boxelder bugs were moving into the area when we left, but they were all over town and even up at the Frank Lloyd Wright home Taleisin. What really was special was the staff. They are friendly and helpful. I was a bit worried when I saw the "fancy" specialty rooms that there might be Las Vegas type people (sorry about the stereotype--I've never been to Las Vegas) staying there and not midwestern types, but those rooms are actually very tastfully done and the other guests were very pleasant. We wish the new owners the best of luck as they continue to bring this property up!

Room Tip: Choose one with the balcony on the back. It is your own private space and you look into a wooded ar...

This is an okay hotel. We stayed here the weekend for the Country fair, and I thought it was a little run down. The staff is very, very nice, but we would definitely try a different hotel next time. I felt the hotel was a little overpriced for the quality. Still, not a bad place to stay if you don't want to pay the money for an eagle ridge type resort. The location is very close to the town which is a nice perk.

On short notice, stayed at Best Western Designer Inn and Suites. For the nightly rate during the week, I expected much better and I was very disappointed. Front desk girl was friendly, but really tried to upsell us to another room (if we'd wanted to pay extra for a suite, we would have booked it!). We requested and received a second floor room on the back side. Most rooms have a small balcony. We got to the room and it was full of boxelder bugs - both inside and outside on the balcony. I probaby killed over a dozen of the bugs in the room; we couldn't even go outside on the balcony because the bugs were everywhere. Dead smeared bugs on the window was really unappetizing! Looks like maybe they sprayed on the balcony, but seeing several dozen dead boxelder bugs all over the balcony was disgusting, so we did not even use the balcony. :( I am generally not really picky, as long as room is clean and quiet. But for the price, this was really bad. There were several areas on the bath/shower that were not clean (obvious -- hairs, spots where someone else's bottles had leaked, ick). The pillows were no better than what you'd get at a fleabag motel. There was dust and prints on everything, so it was obvious no one had really cleaned the room. The refrigerator would not keep anything cold, but no matter, because the "hum" from the frig was so annoying that we had to unplug it anyway while we slept. Used the pool and hot tub in the morning -- neither were very clean which made me uneasy. The hotel is on a major highway, and is not very sound-proofed, because even though we were on the back-side, we heard the highway noise all night. I cannot imagine how awful it was on the front side. As others have said, there are no elevators, which isn't a big deal, but if I was handicapped, I would have been offended that I couldn't even get to the pool area without using the stairs. I thought the hotel corridoors were dark and dank. Breakfast was awful - fake eggs, day old bread, pre-frozen muffins, lukewarm juice. It was our first trip to Galena, and we will definitely be back to Galena, but not to the BW Designer Inn & Suites. Spend your money elsewhere.

Room Tip: If you like to shop, stay in one of the B&B's or hotels right down on Main St.

This motel is situated on the outskirts of Galena in a commercial area. There are patios / balcony's to most rooms, although the first floor rooms are mainly suites. There is no lift to the 2nd floor. I had a king on the 2nd floor which was spacious and good value.Impressive indoor and outdoor pool which are linked and a patio area. A hot / continental breakfast is provided but not impressive. There is a fast food outlet next door but if you want more for dinner you will have to go into town about a mile away where there are many good restaurants.
A good overnight stay

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have afternoon sunshine for the balcony

Bill and I travel as the Odd Couple. Maybe it is because we like being a little corney, and a little bit crazy with having fun together. Either way, we really had a fantastic time in Galena visiting family, and intereacting with Amy. Amy works at the front desk, and her personality blends in with ours, leaving time only to laugh and talk about all the things we did during the day of visiting Galena, Dubuque, and Potosi. Amy always was there for advice, and ideas of things to see. Best of all was the large rooms, clean rooms, quiet surroudings, and good breakfasts. The pool and jacuzi were just what we needed after long days vacationing. Thank you, Best Western, and perfect representative, Amy! We will be back sometime before the snow flies! The Odd Couple, Bill and David

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet area..like away from the lobby.
