Abe's Spring Street Guest House
Ranked #12 of 32 Galena B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 26, 2014

My wife and I stayed at Abe's Spring Street House this past Valentine's Day. The room we stayed in was awesome! It was almost completely decorated by artwork made by one of the owners (Charles). We had dinner served to us in our room by the owners (Sandy and Charles) which was excellent and exactly what we were looking for in a B&B. The next morning we were served an outstanding home made breakfast and enjoyed speaking with fellow travelers and the owners. Finally, we bought a bunch of wonderful artwork for family and friends from the Stone House Pottery & Gallery--which is owned and operated by Sandy and Charles. We had a great time and highly recommend both the B&B and the Gallery to anyone looking for a weekend get away in the upper midwest. Galena and the surrounding area is also very beautiful with lots of activities (shopping, skiing, hiking) to do near by.

Room Tip: Ask for Albert's glenn room...

"Surprise me," I said when he asked about Valentine's Day. A drive north ended in Galena, with snow-capped steeples and lintels beckoning me to get out and walk. "Later," he said. We pulled into the drive of a historic limestone building on the main drag, and the real adventure began.

Innkeepers Sandy and Charles devoted elbow grease, love, and superb artistry when they converted a historic icehouse into a romantic hideaway, one of only two suites. Talk about privacy!!! The town's famous stairs unfold in this amazing property, as do collector-worthy bronzes, paintings, and sculptures. The Abe's Spring Street experience includes gourmet breakfasts, a private Jacuzzi/sauna room, and tete-a-tetes with a noteworthy local artist and retired schoolteacher who'll query you as to your preferences and tailor your trip accordingly.

Cost-conscious guys like my husband appreciate Abe's Spring competitive pricing and bang for the buck. Oh, the details! You'll find me relaxing in that spa or hand-crafted king-sized brass bed, thankful for folks that labor so MY holiday will shine.

Room Tip: We stayed in the old ice house but hope to try the higher-level suite on our next visit!!!!

We have been visiting Abe's about once a year for the past 5 years, and it's always a pleasure. Sandy and Charles provide top-rate hospitality, and Sandy's breakfasts are truly spectacular. Plan on a light lunch! My husband and I love the hot tub and the sauna - the sauna room is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. There are so many artistic details everywhere you look. The Christmas decor is lovely as well (but not over the top).

As mentioned by another reviewer in our party, Sandy and Charles absolutely went the extra mile in terms of attention to the grounds and our safety when we stayed before Christmas along with a bit of a winter storm. The first day we had ice, and the second snow - Sandy and Charles worked tirelessly to clear both, and in the morning when the snow was still falling, Sandy brought breakfast to us.

We love Abe's in Galena - it's the perfect place to relax, and we will certainly be back!

Room Tip: Abe's is the perfect place to stay as a party of 4 - one couple downstairs and another in the up...

We arrived for our return visit to Abe's Spring Street Guest House just as a heavy winter snow did the same. This is relevant because Charles worked tirelessly to ensure as safe and slip-free an experience for us as humanly possible. One of our party is mobility limited, so it really mattered. And what can you say about Sandy's breakfasts? Simply divine! The rooms are well furnished and all the necessary appliances and comforts are available. Parking is adequate in quantity and right by your door. The free wi-fi is a nice touch, though the signal is a just a little bit weak in the "upper" section of the building. Reservations, check-in, check out are all no-hassle events. The original art incorporated into the decor is pleasing and impressive. The beds are clean and firm - you'll sleep well. Abe's isn't cheap, and it shouldn't be. It's a first-rate B&B. So if you want cheap, try Motel 6. Sandy and Charles are genuinely nice people who will give you an outstanding vacation experience you'll remember with pleasure long after check-out. I expect to return again and again!

Room Tip: They book well in advance. Don't count on a last-minute reservation. This place isn't exac...

A perfect bed and breakfast and a wonderful, peaceful, romantic getaway. Abe's is walking distance to town and the owners sandy and Charles were so warm and hospitable. Sandy's breakfast was delicious and the rooms were immaculate and charming. Charles beautiful artwork was in Albert's Glen and the gallery was right next door where his amazing work is. They were lovely people and we will certainly return.

This is my second stay at the Guest House. I came this time for the Glaze and Graze weekend. My room was comfy, as before. Big bed, nice bathroom (thick towels), and a cozy TV room. Next door, is the pottery shop on one side and on the other side is the pottery studio. In the studio, we met for the Glaze part of the weekend. A small, great group joined me, on Friday night, to draw patterns on our dinnerware, then paint them. In the night they were fired in the kiln for us. Saturday night, we met again for a delicious dinner served on our own plates, in a gently formal manner, in a beautiful, candle lit room. Delicious breakfasts too! A perfect weekend!
