Stayed In the French cottage, walked in the room, great music was playing, everything was so French, it was Great. We were so relaxed, We did not want to leave the room. Every morning we were on the inclosed porch overlooking the Mississippi, sipping on a cup of coffee. Both of us enjoyed every minute at the GoldMoor Inn !!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn't know what to expect, but what a grand hotel and restaurant nestled in the in the woods south of Galena, Illinois, overlooking the Mississippi River. The attention we received from the staff was prompt, friendly, very efficient and created a relaxing evening to enjoy a great meal and watch the sun set over the river. The food preparation was outstanding and was delicious. My group of friends are planning a return trip because we had such a great experience. You have to experience it to believe such a beautiful place exists with 5 star luxury.

Located downriver a few miles from Galena, Illinois, you feel like you're in a wilderness paradise as this inn overlooks the Mississippi backwaters. We did not stay at the inn, so I can not speak to that, although from the outside it looked lovely with very nice grounds. We went there to eat at the restaurant. Whoa, Nelly, was it worth the drive! This is not inexpensive (our dinner and drinks for two was over $100.00), but it was absolutely topnotch in every respect. The restaurant is elegant, quiet, and has a gorgeous view. Our server, Sue B., was also brtending and serving a group of 24 in another room, but you's d never know it, she was so cool calm and collected. The menu is sophisticated, seasonal, and every dish served to our party was beautifully presented. There were no complaints. We were not rushed. It was fine dining at its best!

My husband and I have been coming to the Goldmoor for 16 years and each time we have had a 5 star experience. The dining is superb, the spa experience exquisite and the luxury inn accommodations are over the top elegant! Relax, rejuvenate and enjoy!

We've stayed in the Leafland Log Cabin on two separate occasions. The cabin is very nicely decorated and comfortable. The entire B&B is beautiful, grounds are incredible, staff very helpful and friendly and breakfasts are tremendous. We've always brought our dog along so we've stayed in one of the log cabins which are the only units that are pet friendly. We're planning another trip to the Goldmoor and are really looking forward to it. We highly recommend The Goldmoor Inn!

Room Tip: The Goldmoor is about six miles from town ~ it's in a remote area but we absolutely love the pla...

We have stayed twice. First was for my son's wedding held here. The wedding was very nice but that's a different review.

The Goldmoor is five stars all the way, but with some quirky aspects that are charming or not depending on your mood when you arrive. First, look at a map. The Goldmoor is situated on a bluff with a commanding view of the Mississippi River. Beautiful. Then look at the road. Six miles from downtown Galena on a winding, twisty country two-lane. I found it fun and picturesque, but I would not want to drive it the first time in the dark. Second, they seem to be anti-signage, preferring to keep the look of (the original) country manor. But they really do need a sign for the main entrance, which is to the lobby and restaurant. (Hint, it's the big door closest to the main parking spaces.). Third, while their dinner cuisine is top notch, five star, and award winning - their breakfast is simple B&B style. While they have a couple of staple alternatives, the hot breakfast is set each day. And it's different each day. (You get the next day's breakfast menu when your room is made up, so it's not a surprise.) While the breakfasts were quite good (and served hot even if you dine in your room) it's a bit unusual for me to have no choices, and some of the combinations are, well, quirky. (If you want an excellent breakfast with more variety try Otto's in town.)

One other thing to be aware of is there is a fairly busy freight train line that runs along the Mississippi and right by Galena. I doubt any hotel in Galena is immune to it. The Goldmoor is maybe a mile from it, but you're on a bluff looking down on the river and that track in the distance. Don't be surprised that you can still hear it to some degree.

So, with that out of the way, I can only repeat what others have said. The accommodations are gorgeous. Very well decorated and appointed rooms. Four that I saw were all spotless, impeccable, and uniquely furnished. The care taken in creating and maintaining these suites is striking. I can't emphasize enough that you read the descriptions on their comprehensive web site. EVERY room is described in detail - and they are all different. I also strongly recommend making your reservations on the phone if you've never stayed here. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. And if you have specific desires or needs they will guide you through the attributes of the best fitting room, so you don't show up expecting a river view, but find yourself in a garden or wooded area.

I think seven of the suites have interior entries on the first and second floor of the main building. Second floor suites are up a flight of stairs, so don't pick them if you can't deal with the stairs. Aside from the varied suites in the main building, there are cottages with a river view, and cottages in a wooded area. Some have a screened porch/deck, some an open deck, and some none. A couple of cottages have barbecues. Point being: ask before you book.

Our first stay was in the First Lady's Suite. Gorgeous and large. Second floor of the main house, so...stairs. The view was a bit disappointing since I didn't know what to expect, but it had three nice size windows looking out on the main courtyard and fountain. One of the benefits to consider regarding these second floor rooms is a spacious, decorated lobby / sitting area outside the suite entrances before you get to the stairs. It's a great place to get together with other guests or just to sit in a nice "living room" with a broader view than some suites.

Second stay was the Irish Cottage. Again, gorgeous. This gave me my view of the Mississippi and private outdoor deck. Lots of windows so tons of light in the afternoon and evening. The large jacuzzi tub between the gas fireplace and the western windows was a delight. Very happy.

As said in other reviews the English Cottage and the Mississippi Suite (in the main building seem to be the favorites and most booked. Both have private screened-in porches with spectacular views of the river, and the English Cottage stands alone with a bunch of room around it. The Irish Cottage is downstairs in a two story cottage with the French Cottage upstairs. The Irish cottage entrance faces the River, with the deck in front, and nothing else :-) The French cottage entrance faces the resort, but I believe it has a deck/patio facing the river as well.

This is a beautiful place if you want to get away from it all. I doubt any room will disappoint (so long as you read the descriptions.)

Room Tip: Read the room descriptions on their web site and then call the Goldmoor to discuss what you want fro...

My husband and I have been here twice. The first time was for our 40th anniversary last November. We stayed in the English Country Cottage.Absolutely amazing! We were warmly greeted by Rita. The entire staff was so very gracious! We returned this summer and stayed in the Mississippi Suite. What a view!! We really enjoyed the private screened porch. The grounds were lovely. Breakfasts were a delight!!. I love this place. I don 't think there are enough adjectives to describe it. They serve dinner five nights. Absolutely five star!!! Taylor, the chef, and Sue, our food server, made our dinners so special .Patricia, the innkeeper, has a great sense of humor which makes the Goldmoor even more special.
