Owner description: It's worth the climb up the steep stairway to see what's inside this lovely Italianate home built in 1858: an actual lead mine, Civil War memorabilia, items honoring Ulysses S. Grant (including an original painting depicting Robert E. Lee's surrender to Grant), plus other historical articles from Galena and Jo Daviess County.

“Don't miss this”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 12, 2013

As a local, city owned museum, I wasn't sure this was worth the time. Boy, was I wrong. The most spectacular part was the Civil War display on the second floor. The US Grant artifacts and displays were thorough and informative. But the centerpiece was the original, mural sized painting "Peace in Union." it's awe-inspiring; No wonder the Smithsonian wants to acquire it...but it should stay right where it is. Another fun feature is the welcoming hologram.

“Galena Historical Society Museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2013

Very interesting little museum with eclectic collection from pre-Civil War era including much Ulysses S. Grant memorabilia. Original of famous painting of Grant & Lee shaking hands at Appamattox which signaled the end of the Civil War. Loved the fact that typed transcripts are available (ask in museum store) for visitors that are hard of hearing

Very interesting museum with loads of old items and photographs. Able to browse at your own pace and see a lot of different items. Very friendly people and got to take a ride in Joe's 1918 T-Model Ford.

“A one time visit type of museum”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2013

A few unique items like the original Nast - Surrender at Appomatox painting. Big emphasis on the lead mines and steamships that shaped early Galena. Some of the displays were a bit amateurish. Seemed like the $8.00 admission fee is a little much for a one hour museum. Was hoping for more about the Civil War in this museum.
