Owner description: This Italianate-style brick house, with original furnishings, looks very much as it did in 1865 when a group of townspeople presented it as a gift to Ulysses S. Grant on his victorious return from the Civil War.

Historic and interesting...You just gotta do it. Our grandsons found the old house truly fascinating.

“Well maintained home with original furnishings of the Grant family.”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

PROS: free (donations appreciated); A significant home to visit especially on the anniversary of the Civil War. It was especially interesting to visit the home following a trip to D.C. and admiring President Grant's immense equestrian statue in front of the Capitol. Unlike other presidential homes, this home has all the original furniture that President Grant and his family used; great docent who explained a lot of features of the home; plenty of free parking; the house sits on a bluff overlooking downtown Galena; there is a “General Store” nearby that represents what it may have looked liked during President Grant’s time; affordable items sold only at the Grant home; clean public bathrooms. There is a log cabin at the lower parking lot.

CONS: none

“Very Rehearsed”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Unless you are a big fan of Ulysses S. Grant, I would probably skip this one. Sure, it's neat to see where one of our nation's presidents lived--but you'll quickly find out that he didn't really reside in Galena that much, even though apparently in his memoirs he refers to it as home.

A tour guide greets you on the porch of the house and goes over history SUPER quickly and you can tell it's rehearsed. You go through the not very big house EXTREMELY quickly and aren't given much time to look around. And then you're done. From start to finish it probably took about 20 minutes. It did only cost $5--but to be honest, I'm not sure it was even worth that.

“Worth it!”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

Tours only last 20 minutes or so, but given that the grant house is walking distance from downtown its definitely worth the walk.

“Great bit of history!”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

Knowledgeable tour guide, interesting spot. I am so imressed with how the state and city has captured so much of Galenas history. Great view of the city from from the hill where the house and grounds sit.
