The thing that made this tour was the guide. She was energetic, engaging, and really knew her stuff. She made the tour interesting and informative. We really enjoyed it because of her and the stories she had to tell. The tour itself is quite short, as one should expect when touring a house that is so small.

The staff on this tour were not very friendly and kind of forgetful. My husband and I showed up for a tour and were told it would start in 15 minutes, so we left and looked in some shops down the street and came back. The same employee was at the front desk and did not recognize us, so again we said we were here for the tour, which was pushed back another 10 minutes because of a late trolley tour group. So we left again and came back. The same employee looked at us and asked if we had signed up already. We said yes, and were finally given the tour.

The tour itself was okay. The tour guide did not seem like she wanted to be there.

Oldest home in Galena with a street front store set up as was in the day with hardware like supplies. Home above business small and modest for the day.

The Dowling House gives you a good picture of what it was like to live in Galena in the 1800's. How rooms were decorated and functional and how traveling artists would barter for rooms by bringing incomplete paintings and painting the hosts picture above the body. Sometimes the head did not match the body, but it was a very unique way to barter.

Just more early history of Galena. My daughter was fascinated by the tools in the house, and the unique cupboards upstairs. We also learned about the iron posts holding the walls together, and why so many early American houses have the stars on the front.
