Grant Park - named for Ulysses S. Grant offers a peaceful spot to relax and an amazing view of the town of Galena. A bit of military history displayed with canons form several wars. Also views of the Galena River.

The water was barely flowing in the fountain (which was in great need of cleaning). Additionally we were there after Memorial Day, yet none of the planters had flowers. :-(

A wonderful little picnic area adjacent to the downtown area, a short walk across a nice little bridge over the river. There are several monuments, cannons and a gazebo. Bring a lunch or supper and sit on the berm and enjoy the laid back environment of the park.

Of all the places to visit in historic Galena, Grant Park is probably the least popular of all of them. But it's worth a stop. And it's not out of the way. It's a convenient stop on the way to or the way back from Grant's House. And it affords a wonderful picturesque view of Galena, like a postcard. Founded in 1891, overlooking the Galena River across from the town, it features a large statue of Grant, the city's No. 1 citizen, and three massive cannons, from the Civil War, from the Spanish-American War and World War I. It is so enjoyable and relaxing to sit on one of the many benches in the park, look at the town across the river and take pictures. And when you've had your fill, you can proceed up the hill to Grant's house or cross the bridge to the town, eager to do more shopping.

the park is very nice to walk around and you can seat and look over the river to the downtown (main st) of Galena. Best not to go when they are having the big art fair, which is nice but park gets way to crowded.
