Once again, we were thrilled with our evening at the Goldmoor. We had heard so much about the Christmas Carol dinners and it was just what we hoped it would be. The prime rib dinner was excellent and the egg nog cheesecake was scrumptious. The holiday decorations and lovely Christmas carolers were what really made the evening perfect. The intimate environment makes you feel right at home. Can't wait to get back!

We stumbled upon the Goldmoor on OpenTable, and are so glad we did. From the moment you walk in the door of the beautiful castle housing the Goldmoor, you are welcomed like a friend. The service is impeccable; you're taken care of by professional and sometimes invisible service. The food was outstanding from appetizers to an array of homemade salad dressings to the mouth watering entrees. I was eager to try their signature beef wellington, and it did not disappoint. The surroundings are beautifully appointed, and the view is breathtaking, overlooking the Mississippi river. We will definitely be back.

The accomodations (Rooms) are some of the most ornate in the tri-State area. You very seldom find rooms so large, that are equipped with a Fire PLace that really heats and also a Jacuzzi. We had a very restfull night, and are looking forward to returning to the Goldmoor in the future.

The staff at the Goldmoor are extremely friendly. They had carolers serenading us while we ate which was magical. The 4 course meal was top notch and very reasonable. The dining room decorations were beautiful as was the Christmas tree. Highly recommended, go visit the Goldmoor!

This evening we ate at the Goldmoor. We being three children and four adults.

Here is what we ordered: three NY strips - one salmon - one duck pasta - one beef wellington - one french onion soup. All the entrees were served with salad and all but the pasta came with veggies.

The steaks were not good quality and dry. Mine was full of grizzle. The others were also very dry. The veggies were "root vegetables" and tasted terrible to all that had them. There was no choice in what veggie came with our dinners. The potatoes were completely bland and uninteresting. The beef wellington was served on top of mashed potatoes which made the puff pastry totally soggy. This meal cost more than $200 - which if as good as we had expected would have been fine. However, this was not the case.

The room that we had was lovely. The presentation was good. The salad and bread were good.

The service was okay. The waitress was nice but clearly not a professional who has a full handle on this kind of job. She spilled ice and water on one of the group and her response was totally off base.

We did not order any desert or after dinner drinks. We paid and left all agreeing if this is the #1 restaurant in Galena that is a poor comment on the rest of the eateries in the area. However, we have had some decent food an good service in more casual restaurants here in Galena.

Now before you write this review off and say "three kids" or "who takes three kids to a 'fine' restaurant. We do and so do our friends. We have traveled extensively with these kids and they have more refined taste in food than many adults. Also, these kids have been to more 'fine' restaurants than many adults and they know good food and service. BTW - there is no children's menu or accommodation for kids such as 1/2 portions. This is not a good place to take kids who do not eat adult food or portions.

I would not return to Goldmoor and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Sorry! The food and service is not what it should be especially at this price!
