When visiting historic Galena there is only one place to stay and that's the Desoto House.
The "oldest continually operating hotel in the state of Illinois" is located right on the main street in the center of the "action," if you consider "action" as antique and specialty shops, restaurants and historic sites. Like the area in which it's located, the Desoto was built in Galena's hay days...1830-1870. Lincoln and Douglas really did sleep there...perhaps on multiple occasions, but at least once when the two were touring the state in 1858 for their 12 famous debates. Grant, of course, called Galena home just before he was launched into history for saving the Union.
Take time to wander around the hotel to view dozens of historic photos. Also, there's a small lounge/library where a contually operating movie histroy runs. Inside parking is free, but you can't get a pickup truck in the garage. Other free parking is a short walk away.
For a great lunch/dinner try Fritz & Frites, a German-French restaurant just two blocks away on the main street.
