“Haunted Historical Dinner Tour”

All I can say is WOW! We felt as if we had stepped back in time. My friends and I bought tickets for the Dinner Tour at the DeSoto House with the Paranormal Research of Illinois. The dinner was great but the highlight was during desert when the paranormal group talked. I had to sleep with the lights on that night but it was well worth it. Chad of PRI did an outstanding job and was extremely informative. All of us agree that we are returning next year for the 2nd Annual Haunted Dinner Tour. Whoever thought of this idea was a genius.

If you want to feel young again, I would advise visiting the DeSoto House in costume on Halloween. The costumes were phenomenal and it seemed like the people stepped out of the 19th century. The Ghouls and Ghosts from the past seemed to walk the halls as guests and DeSoto staff, in costume, made our stay memorable They had "The Paranormal Institute of Illinois" do a presentation after dinner. The presentation was a little too technical in the beginning, but they made up for it with the recorded documentation of sightings at the DeSoto and other Galena Properties. The hair stood up on the back of my neck.
I would recommend a visit to Galena and the DeSoto House Hotel to anyone looking for a getaway that is only hours away from Chicago.

My boyfriend and I go to Galena often, and when we do we always stay at the DeSoto House for so many reasons!! I can not compliment this place enough!! Our whole experience there is nothing but wonderful, relaxing and peaceful.

First of all, the food there is absolutely delicious!!! Whether dining in the General's Dining Room for dinner, having lunch in Green Street Tavern or Breakfast in the Courtyard, we've never had a bad meal..they always seem to impress! Their menu selection is like no other! I must say that you all need to dine in the General's Dining Room..not only is it great food BUT it's very peaceful/comfortable setting/feeling that makes you enjoy your evening even more.

We've stayed in many different rooms there and one is as comfortable/homey as the next. The room are very clean and cozy! The staff is excellent, so helpful and enjoyable...they make you feel like you are at home!!
Love, Love this place and can NOT wait to go back, which will be soon:)

My husband and I stayed in August - a chilly weekend by August standards. We never really figured out the thermostat as it didnt seem to effect the room temperature. The room (215) seemed to have fresh paint smell so each time we came into room we turned on bath exhaust fan and turned on the room fan until acclimated. Other than that, the room was very pleasant, clean and accomodating. The staff were all very nice and helpful. The parking was great. The convenience of being right on Main street cannot be beat if you are there for the shopping/strolling/late night eats/ambience, etc. One has to expect, given the age of the building there will be minor flaws - slanted floors, creaky noises, musty smells occasionally - nothing that cant be overlooked. The architecture, interior design, charm and history (not to mention the mystery at times!) of this place is unique and provides a special niche for those open to a pleasant but slightly different hotel experience.

My girlfriend and I love Galena and the DeSoto House. We try get there some three times a year, and enjoy seeing people that work there and know us from our frequent trips. Of course when there we stay at the DeSoto. It is old, so it has faults to be sure. But there are minimal. Sheila and Scott are great at the front desk. The bar has an ambience that is old and friendly, and crowded. The staff are mostly young adults, but all are friendly once you get chatting with them. We always stay in Room 313, and it was recently refurnished with some new items. Nice, but a little more could be done. We went for the 4th of July. We knew this is obviously a big town event (Civil War, Vicksburg, Grant et al) and we loved the roof top party. You purchase tickets ($5.00) prior to the event to reserve a spot for only 375 people. The roof to the parking grage is closed off, and tables are set up. You can purchase beers and food and just sit up there and chat with townspeople and guests until the fireworks go. That was a great show put on by the Fire Department (go figure). All this is after a town parade. But back to the hotel.
I can't really say anything bad about the hotel. It is old, just like the town, but you have to expect quirks. Slanted floors yes, but it is built like the rest of the town on the side of a hill. Musty, sometimes but it is over 125 years old and never has been gutted to totally modernize it, and if it was it would lose its charm as it would "Faux old", and that you can get anywhere. Anyway, I don't go to Galena to spend a bunch of time in the hotel. Great place, great town, great hotel. It is not a corporate owned hotel so money has to come out of much smaller pockets, so changes are slow.
I recommend it to everyone because it is part of the experience of Galena.

My husband's company recently planned an event for it's top dealers/salesmen & spouses. From the beginning when we started planning the event at the DeSoto House, Deborah Bertucci's experience, professionalism, great ideas, helpfulness, etc. were what made this event so memorable for everyone who attended! We couldn't have even imagined or planned such an event without Deborah's competent assistance. Everyone enjoyed the DeSoto House which is tastefully decorated, very clean, the rooms very nice, the staff very helpful, and the location excellent (especially for shopping as well as for the extra tours/events that Deborah helped us with planning). Everyone also enjoyed the food and the service which were excellent! We are extremely pleased and grateful to Deborah Bertucci and the DeSoto House for making this a memorable event as well as a welcoming place to stay. We will highly recommend Deborah and the DeSoto House to anyone who is planning on coming to Galena for personal or business reasons. Great job & thank you DeSoto House (Deborah) !!!

My new husband and I honeymooned at the DeSoto last March during Easter weekend. We took advantage of everything the hotel had to offer; from shopping in it's stores (accessible only from Main street), to enjoying drinks in both its restaurants and pub, borrowing a book from its library, learning about the hotel's rich history, enjoying a ghost tour, and the spectacular Easter brunch they held the following Sunday. (Which we HIGHLY recommend to anyone and everyone planning a visit to Galena!) The ambiance of the hotel is warm and inviting, and the staff was very friendly and informative. Our room was very clean and cozy. But for its size and limited amenities, overpriced. We loved that the hotel is right in the middle of downtown and within walking distance to all the shops. The best part is that the DeSoto has an underground parking garage so you don't have to worry about finding a spot in the crowded streets. The hotel has undergone some renovations and navigating around the halls and your parking place was like walking around in a maze. Which made it somewhat inconvenient, especially for a smoker! As I mentioned earlier, the hotel's stores were only accessible from Main Street, which means you have to leave the hotel to enter them. Certain parts of the parking garage are the same way. Architectual inconveniences aside, we loved the DeSoto House Hotel and look forward to an anniversary stay!
