“Give it a try”

So, it's a bit tired, the old place. But, what a gorgeous setting!! Nestled at the top of the mountain above the Mississippi, spring is a perfect time to appreciate the view from this resort. We had the place practically to ourselves! The staff seemed happy to see us (perhaps lonely?) since they told us it's packed during ski season, but really tapers off come spring. The lounge area has a beautiful view, great appetizers and a friendly staff. Perfect for a late afternoon cocktail. Kids loved the mini golf, right on the grounds, although the popular alpine slide wasn't open yet. The pool was refreshing as was the hot tub, but the hot tub didn't seem too pristine (lack of use?). The room was a bit musty at first but fresh air did the trick. The room was huge with plenty of room for five. Best of all, this place was a bargain. We tried to go during ski season but it was either booked or had expensive packages attached to it. This is a good, very inexpensive way to see if you like it enough to come back to ski. I think we will. But you really can't beat it for the price. Great for a weekend getaway from the Chicago area.

Spent a weekend getaway at Chestnut Mountain Resort. As it's off-season, not skiing-not summer we got a great rate. For that price, this place was a gem! It even included a hot breakfast - what a deal! We really enjoyed the pool and jacuzzi. We had drinks in the lounge which also had a great view. The rooms may be a bit dated but they are HUGE! We found our room to be very clean and nicely appointed - and again at the price it was a DEAL! The drive to / from the resort is incredible ... that was half the fun. Just gorgeous. All in all - I'd highly recommend this place and we would surely stay here again. The service was a bit spotty - like waiting 30 mintues for the breakfast - but then again - it was free so take it w/a grain of salt! Otherwise, it made for a fantastic place to get away from the city for a weekend and pretend your back in Ireland - because that what the rolling hills look like in the spring!

I read the other negative reviews and was apprehensive about staying at the lodge. At check-in I requested to see the room first. The room was clean, had no strange odors, and worked just fine. Staff was friendly in the lodge and out on the slopes. Never sampled their food but the drinks were served stiff...as requested. Had a great time!!

They have 14 person suites, which was just perfect for our group of 13! We had a blast, and staying right next to the action was so much fun!

where to start mmm lets see the rooms need to be cleaned more efficiently they all have a musty smell to them granted it is a old lodge but still they can take better care of it. The food wasn't all that great for the price i paid. Some of the food smelled just as bad as the restrooms. Even the water smelled bad. The service was lousy didn't have all the right essentials in the rooms, the wait staff was rude, if their was a problem management just ignored you. The skiing on the other hand was good. but i recommend staying in galena for lodging and food like the irish cottage for lodging and fried green tomatoes for food its a bit pricey but it is good

We stayed at this hotel last summer for one night. We had found information about it in a pamplet while visiting Chicago. I had heard Galena was beautiful so we thought we would try it. Galena is beautiful and walking around in town is wonderful. We had dinner at Fried Green Tomatoes. It is pricey, but classy and wonderful. Our family of 5 loved it ! Anyways as far as the resort we were not impressed. We checked in and our room was showing signs of age but we found it to be clean and roomy. That was ok. We understand it is an older lodge so that can be understood. The rest of the resort is extremely dated. The pool was actually pretty nice and the views of the Mississippi were amazing !!!! The alpine slide was really fun and taking the ski lift back up the hill was fun too. However we paid a pretty steep price to do this. And no we are not cheap people when it comes to having fun with our kids, but it was a bit much. They could have at least given us one complimentary slide for just staying there. Anybody else staying elsewhere would pay the same as we were. As far as the food we ate at the restaurant once for breakfast. We ate from the buffet. It was ok. Our service was alright but everything in the dining room was extremely old and overall it wasn't a pleasant experience. The views from the dining room were very beautiful though. If you could get a great deal I would say maybe try this place out. Many other reviewers have praised the skiing in the winter from this resort but other than that I can't see us going back unless we wanted to try that.

With all the bad reviews, we were rather apprehensive. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the room and the fabulous views! We checked out 3 different rooms and rooms in the "chalet" wing were small and wet-smelling. Ask for rooms in the Edelweiss wing facing river if you can. They are large with decent furnishings. Value for $ on weekdays. Alpine slide was the highlight of our stay! Restaurant food was average to bad. The parmesan cheese was mouldy and sour. We put it on our pasta (yeech!) and destroyed the pasta. When we informed the server, he took it away but did not take it off the check! The server we had one morning was so bad we didn't leave a tip. Pity, resort has so much potential with the right management. Stay there but eat elsewhere (like at Fried Green Tomatoes in Galena-yummy!)
