My husband and my mother enjoyed brunch at The Whistle Stop in September. While my husband and I had visited The Whistle Stop before, this was the first time we'd take my mother along for the ride. She was delighted by the ambience of this quaint restaurant - Trains abound! My husband stuck with his typical skillet - a delight for his pallet as always. I ordered a Smoked Sausage Benedict which just about knocked my socks off! My Mom was overjoyed that her eggs were cooked "well-done" and that The Whistle Stop offered ham off the bone. To top things off, we ordered one slice of Bourbon Pecan Pie to split amongst the three off us - what a shame that we'd never ordered pie before. It was absolutely AMAZING. I have never eaten a pie that was a delicious as that one. The Whistle Stop has always delivered solid breakfast faire, but they knock the ball out of the park with their pie - Highly Recommended!

My wife and I had visited the Whistle Stop Cafe in Fox Lake, IL for breakfast in September 2013. From the outside the diner/cafe appears very small, but when walking in this restaurant is very large with the first room housing bar-seating and tables, and to the right of this room is a wide-open room that holds multiple tables. The Whistle Stop is full of train memorabilia -- everything from ads and signs for the Zephyr to a lot of model train cars, bears in conductor uniforms, walls with wallpaper trim of trains all around the restaurant, etc -- which is very cute.

Aside from the very nice atmospheric train theme of the restaurant, the staff is incredibly friendly.

Now to mention the food -- this is excellent. I had a the Cowboy Skillet -- which had potatos, scrambled eggs, sausage and sausage gravy -- and comes with a side of the Texas Toast (which cannot be missed!). My wife had the mexican omelette, which was very good as well. We ordered a half-order of biscuits and gravy (which comes with 2 very large biscuits, and a plate full of peppery sausage gravy, and is more than enough as a side), where the biscuits were slightly crispy on the top and bottom (almost as though they were flash grilled), but extremely soft and almost non-existant in the middle -- they basically melt in your mouth!

There is also a bottle of XXX Hot Sause at every table. It has a kick to it (I don't believe it is too spicy), and added good flavor to my skillet as well.

I will definitely come again -- their food is excellent. Unlike some diners, they also accept credit cards. Thank you!

Just creeping to a 4th star...the inside is nice, food better than average, but staff marginal. I was charged double the amount of beers that I ordered and when I went to explain to the waitress, she seemed to take offense. It is not simple mistake to make, since my wife and I were at the same pace but I was taken back by the reaction.

Great little family owned restaurant in Fox Lake, Illinois. Just steps from the Fox Lake, Illinois rail station this breakfast and lunch only restaurant is a great gathering place for folks before they head into Chicago on the train for a Cubs game or other activities in the city. The boating crowd can also meet before heading out on the lake. Along with the ample menu there are daily specials for both breakfast and lunch. The food is good.
The wait staff is friendly and attentive. Service can sometimes be a little slow on busy weekends but, there is outside seating during the summer and most people are pleasant about it.
Often times you will see a birthday donut and candle being brought to a table by the singing servers. I would suggest a slice of one of Melinda's wonderful pies.
Enjoy!!
