Matafonua Lodge sits on an ideal site, northern tip of the island with beach access to the east and west. Really good snorkeling on the east side, and safe sandy swimming on the west. Whale watching and snorkeling with whales was an immense experience, made even better by the professional conduct of the guides, which combined real concern for the whales with a contagious enthusiasm as if it was their first and only day on the water, too. Not to mention their willingness to share photos and videos they made on the trip. Darren and Nina are very caring hosts, and their three kids add to the welcoming atmosphere especially for families. Their interactions with the staff from the village were very positive and personal, which is an important element in whether I feel comfortable in a place like this. In short, all the treats and entertainments of a resort are there, but with an atmosphere as if some good personal friends had just invited you to share their private spot in paradise. The fales are very well maintained, absolute beach front, and the restaurant/bar leaves nothing to be desired. Already planning to come back.

The location and atmosphere of the lodge really made our holiday - snorkelling on the reef right off the beach, whale tours that leave metres from our Fale and great food, service and like-minded people to share our experiences. Cultural tour to neighbouring island also a great day out. Swimming with the humpbacks is an amazing experience which hopefully will remain low-key and responsibly managed for others to enjoy in the future.

Our week at Matafonua was one of the best holidays of my life. Peak experiences include swimming with a very curious baby humpback whale, snorkellling in crystal clear waters over lovely reef and eating Nina's fantastic desserts. The fale accomodation is simple but clean and comfortable and the setting is exquisite with everything you need on site- beautiful scenery, coral reef just off the beach, a full dive shop, really good food and friendly people.
Getting there on real Tonga airlines was a bit of a nightmare, but the resort is well worth the effort. Already saving to go back.

Room Tip: beach front fales get a cooling breeze

Foa island is most people's idea of a tropical paradise. When we were there the max temps were about 28 deg with a gentle breeze blowing. Matafonua is on the tip of the island with the sea on both sides. Lovely coral and tropical fish are within a stonesthrow of your room in shallow water and further out are the majestic whales which are accessible by boat from the lodge and sometimes visible from shore.
The clear water and reefs make it a divers' delight.
Nina and Darren are the most friendly and welcoming hosts that you could imagine and the food would not be out of place in a top restaurant.
Older people may like a little more luxury but other than that it is perfect.

Amazing diving and whale watching on the Lodge's own boats had the neighbour's guests queuing up. Snorkeling from the beach was fantastic, as were all the stories told each day in the communal dining room

Darren and Nina are amazing hosts, they go above and beyond to assist with anything.
The rooms are clean and tidy and absolute beachfront with the bathrooms super close to every room.
The food is amazing and plenty of it, and dinning every night and sharing stories of the day with everyone was fantastic.
The diving was great with very experienced dive instructors sharing there extensive knowledge.
The whale watching is conducted in a very professional manner that has the least amount of impact on the whales with the boat going out with very small numbers, and of course if you are lucky enough to get in the water with them be prepared to not stop smiling.
If you are visiting Ha'apai this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: All the rooms are beachfront.
