“We'd love to go back there!”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

We were struck by the beauty and peace of the resort as we walked to our room. The fales were a good distance from each other giving privacy and all on the west-facing beach. The white sandy beach shelved steeply so that it was easy to swim at all tides and there were coral bommies to snorkel out to if we wanted. Nice touches like hammocks dotted around and deck chairs that we could put where we wanted. Loads of hibiscus and golden orb spiders to admire. I had pre-booked my scuba diving with the neighbouring resort, Matafonua who were very well organised and a good alternative for food and an east-facing beach. I could have dived with Sandy Beach too and may try their yacht-based trips next time as well as Matafonua. The hostess, Peta at Sandy Beach was very helpful and welcoming. We'd love to go back there.

Tonga is a divine destination for the traveller who is looking to escape the usual 5 star hotel resort type accomodation. Sandy Beach Resort offers the traveller some home comforts within the restraints of an underdeveloped nation. So.......... If you are looking for the opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of western life, then this is it. Pristine sandy beaches at your doorstep and clean and accomodating rooms. There are no T.V.s or electronic devices to distract . Breakfasts are a combination of fruit platters and toast and eggs if you desire....the coffee is sublime! No lunch, although the offer to take items from your breakfast menu is an option (there are slices of cheese and meats available - very european) If you cant wait until the dinner menu - there is no lunch menu. I wouldn't hold your breath. Often the item you have chosen is unavailable or the staff look at you as if you are asking for an unreasonable request! Likewise dinner options are restricted and you have to choose at breakfast. Always a fish option (very restrictive) and a european option. We never chose this but those who did said they did not enjoy. Aside from the food, the resort is fabulous. There is no obligation to do anything other than relax! Kayaking is available as is bikes for riding into town if you are capable - my husband managed and enjoyed!! The rooms are clean and serviced daily if you require. The weather was awesome and the people terrific. Well reccomended and we would definitely return. The swimming pool is the ocean - warm and inviting.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same

We stayed at Sandy Beach Resort for 5 days, mainly to swim with the whales. The resort is located at a beautiful sandy beach. Swimming and snorkeling at the front door. Food was excellent, staff very friendly and helpful. The bungalows are well equipped and very comfortable.
We can highly recommend Sandy Beach Resort to anyone looking for a relaxing and exiting holiday, swim with the whales! With Matt and Jodie, also located at the resort.

Room Tip: All the rooms are facing the beach

Its a long way from Australia to Tonga, then Ha'apai and then Sandy Beach resort. Its a good thing its worth the effort. We were picked up from the airport by Jurgen (the owner) and considering the current unreliability of the airline it was a surprise that our host still had a sense of humour. Imagine having half of your bookings delayed or stranded by the teething troubles of a new airline operator and you get the idea of what was happening. Anyway we check in over a drink of fresh coconut juice (in the coconut) and we are shown to a beautiful fale (unit) 20 metres from the beach. Its large, roomy with a great bathroom, hot water and very clean. We unpack and its into the water to relax, snorkel on the reef (close by) and de-stress. Dinner is good, beer is cold and we are starting to realise we made a pretty good choice staying here. Breakfast was plentiful and fresh with fruit, yoghurt, toast, eggs etc. Jurgen offered to take us to our various destinations for diving etc and although you pay (fuel is expensive $4 litre) he is a lot more reliable than the local one or two taxis (old bombs really). The beauty of Sandy Beach resort is that you can do as little or as much as you wish. I loved our days off where we just swam (it is a sandy beach), went for walks or just laid back and read a book. Matafonua Lodge is just up the road if you want to have a change but in general you could not fault Jurgens resort. Sandy Beach now offers whale watching and swimming and all the guests that went out on this had a great time. For relaxation, good food and a great setting this was one of the nicest places we have visited.

Room Tip: They are all good.

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a trip around the islands in Tonga. The fale was a lovely surprise for us - spacious, quite modern with nice shower and most importantly, hot water and electricity. Even free wi fi! the view from the fale and everywhere around the resort was amazing, nice blue sea and beautiful sandy beach.

You can choose your evening meal during the day - you don't have to have a 3 course meal, each item is priced separately which means that you can share a starter or dessert if you want to. The evening meal was nice, you were sat with other guests and we had the privilege of meeting some very interesting people during the evening meals. Breakfast was ok, quite basic but had all that you needed.

We also had a couple of snacks during the day, the French fries were freshly made and were delicious. However, food was a little pricey. If you want something different and slightly cheaper, you can walk up to the other resort on the island and have something there.

All in all, great experience - I would definitely recommend this resort to anyone who wishes for some relaxing time in Tonga!

We visited the Sandy Beach Resort on our Stay at Foa Island. This place is nestled on a beautiful sandy beach and is surrounded on the other side by beautiful gardens and near natural forest.
The host was very friendly and most helpful in every way. The accommodation here includes ensuite bathrooms. I would highly recommend this if you would prefer not to share a bathroom, (the bathrooms at Matafonua were not overly clean)
The location at Sandy Beach although stunning is not comparable with that at Matafonua Lodge.

I had the advantage of staying at both Sandy Beach Resort and Matafonua Lodge during the same week in August so I can compare the two. Both were great with lots of similarities but for me, Matafonua was better as it felt like a more island experience.

Never-the-less, Sandy Beach was still very good and if I hadn't tried the alternative, I would have been very happy to stay at Sandy Beach.

The accommodation at Sandy Beach is more western with an island feel (I am sure that will suit lots of people). Each bungalow is close to the long sandy beach and nice reefs of coral and bright fish are a short swim from shore. It's a very short walk up the beach to Matafonua where the reef lagoon is.

Peta was friendly and organised and very helpful and I can't fault her service. We were picked up from the airport on time by a friendly driver. Our room was clean and quiet. The restaurant staff were friendly but my evening meal was over priced and over cooked pork.

Foa is a beautiful island and I am so glad I went there and experienced it.
