I had the andouille sausage and shrimp cheesy grits and they were fabulous. Scrambled eggs and an indescribable but delicious side. Cool kitschy decorations.

This is not like other diners. It has art -paintings of long faces, mostly -- all over the walls, together with antique appliances and a menu that takes Diner and makes it Different. Little miniature works of art done by the owner are also for sale on tiny easels. A recent meal of a "mole sloppy joe" was great stuff. Shakes and malts are deeelish. Very nice staff. Couple tables outdoors on the Prairie Street side.

We discovered Prairie Joe's when we wanted to catch a bite before a Northwestern Football game and have been dining here ever since. It has a diner feel but it is filled with a very eclectic
mixture of antiques and paintings. There is plenty to look at while you are waiting for your meal. While you can get the old breakfast standby's the menu offers some unique offerings. Be sure to take a look at the handwritten specials which very daily. It may be shrimp, grits and andouille sausage, or lamb, garbanzo bean, and feta quesadilla served with curried rice and eggplant stew and a curry sauce or possibly poblano pepper hominy chilaquiles. Many of the special menu items have a mexican or middle eastern flair. They are all delicious. The service is excellent and friendly. We think nothing of driving 20 minutes for our Prairie Joe fix.

I've never had a bad meal at prairie joes. They have a changing menu of inventive sandwiches, salads, and soups, and a good breakfast selection as well.
