“Charming look, not very clean or comfortable”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2013

The service at check in was very friendly and polite, and we enjoyed the décor. It certainly is a cute place, with the library, lobby, antique elevator. But, our room was a let-down. It was small (which we expected), but to the point of being cramped. It was also poorly lit and the rug was unclean. The bed provided the most uncomfortable night sleep I've had in my life (and I'm a backpacker, not picky). The pillows (even the extras in the closet) were so flat that they were useless even piled together and the mattress had areas that were hard as a board and other areas that sagged and gave no support...I am actually shocked that a bed could be that bad!

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

Dear Azsuma,
Thank-you for taking the time to write your review. Sadly I couldn't agree more! shortly after your stay the Margarita European Inn was remodeled and updated. I hope this will give us another chance to host you when you return to the area.

As others have said, this hotel feels European. Only you can decide if you are okay with that. Personally, I don't mind the lack of flat screen TV, I don't mind using the stairs instead of the teeny antique elevator. I don't even mind walking down to the second floor to get ice. However, that also means there is no air conditioning. Not a problem the night I was there as the evening was cool and the ceiling fan helped a lot. However, when I woke up early to get started for a long drive, there was no hot water and no one at the front desk to talk to about it. The service when I checked in was fine, it was just unfortunate that there was no one there first thing in the morning to offer a partial refund on my room cost due to the lack of hot water.

I'm happy to stay in a unique hotel that is more old-world than the local chain. But in my mind, a hotel should provide, at minimum, a decent, clean room and a hot shower. The Margarita only got half of that right. And if it had been a hot night, it would have been very uncomfortable.

Dear Julie,
Thank-you for taking the time to give such helpful feedback. Since your stay with us, The Margarita European Inn has addressed all your concerns. Each room has been properly updated with air-conditioning, we have brand new hot water tanks, flat screen televisions with HD content and the desk is now staffed 24 hours a day. However, we still maintain our original Otis Elevator. We hope you will give us a another opportunity when you visit the area next.

We visited Chicago for the 4th of July celebrations and stayed all weekend at the Margarita European inn. Located minutes away from the CTA line, it is just what you need, to step back from the hustle and bustle of a big town and enjoy an authentic European inn experience. Th rooms aren't spacious but quite cozy, the service staff are very warm and friendly! I just love the laid back charm that this place exude, very much the Downton Abbey of Evanston!
If you are looking for the sophisticated class of 21st century Hotels with their extravagance and overrated charms, this isn't the place for you! But should you want to enjoy a cozy time with your loved ones far away from the maddening crowds and rude city slickers and experience the quaint charms of a small cozy hotel, this is just the place for you. Ideal B&B place to stay in Evanston, IL.

Room Tip: Suites are much better than the dorm style single rooms. I was a little hesitant about the shared ba...

Chose to stay in Evanston while visiting nearby Northwestern University and Chicago during June of 2012.
The Inn is actually very authentically European and has great service. The front desk helped us get around the area. If you're looking for a modern place with a pool, fitness center, etc this is not it. But if you are visiting the area otherwise I highly recommend the inn. It has a great character and a nice view; you can walk out on a little balcony from the front room where breakfast is served. Room was pretty small but suited our needs for storing luggage, sleeping for a night.

Downstairs is an amazing Italian restaraunt (http://www.margaritainn.com/restaurant.html). The food is fantastic and very elegant. There is also a small library area upstairs where you can sit and read and look outside. I was able to walk to NU easily as well as the CTA stop and take the train into Chicago.

This is a brilliant hotel its not plastic or perfect its rooms are small and it needs money spending on it, but please spend it wisely because this hotel has something about it. The place oozes class, the staff are ace, the setting quiet but well placed for local restaurants etc, and the trip to Chicago by train is so easy take one train to the centre of the City sorted. Breakfast is varied continental in a beautiful drawing room. If you go, go with an open mind and enjoy the place.

Room Tip: book early for a private bathroom

The public spaces are very agreeable and the staff/owners go out of their way to make your stay a pleasant one, but calling it 'European' is stretching the description to say the least. The rooms are small and not very comfortable, the breakfast is limited and the entrance steps definitely not for anyone with mobility problems. Perhaps service makes up for everything here, but without a car a visitor is really marooned.

A pretty cool place if you are not expecting too much. The sitting area in the hotel was nice although old and and the rooms are a little small and decorated in a older theme ... But I enjoyed it. I always have liked quirkey places and this is one of those places. The location is great!
