This is my favorite place in Elgin by far. It has amazing milk shakes and the food is delightful.

“This is one of Elgin's best eating venues.”

I like the vegetarian options and always make room for the malts. The malt, which is like a desert must be shared. The prices are reasonable and the service is good. This is overall, a friendly place.

Ice cream is always good!! Not to bad for the price...an old fashion downtown setting...great in the summer with the outdoor seating!

“Best in Elgin”
Reviewed June 10, 2012

Elgin is not a town one would typically assume great cuisine would be hidden. However, the City of Elgin has recently taken great pains to restore the city to its former glory, and I believe that the restaurant scene has great potential. One fantastic restaurant, Al's Cafe and Creamery, is hopefully a precursor for more fantastic restaurants to come.

Nestled in an architecturally cool part of town, fairly close to the river, Al's Cafe is a two-story restaurant that maintains an old fashioned charm combined with rustic yet gourmet food. Each month Al's features a different ingredient on the menu (shrimp month, ribs month, etc.) and offers this special ingredient in various styles, from Jamaican to German. The menu constants are a few fish and steak dishes as well as classic Swartzwaldersweinerschnitzel (spelling?) and the Zigeurner (spelling?) schnitzels, both of which are spectacular. The food is a bit pricier but well worth it as it is delicious, hot, and wonderfully executed. The portions are fairly large, particularly with the schnitzels. The deserts are also a bit hefty in price but worth it as well. Overall, the beautiful atmosphere, excellent service, and incredible food combine together for easily the best restaurant experience in Elgin.

“Always a Winner”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

I've been going to Al's Cafe and Creamery since it opened (in the early 80s?) and have been there literally a few hundred times. They have NEVER served me a bad meal. Dishes are beautifully and consistently prepared. Menu has variety and Chef Tony is not afraid to try new offerings. (Chef Tony co-owns with his wife, Pat, who runs the front-end restaurant operation masterfully and is GENUINELY FRIENDLY to all.) Outstanding sandwiches, salads and soups are part of their casual fare, but the entrees are equally fantastic--best salmon and New England clam chowder I have ever had ANYWHERE. (A friend said that the only time she ever had better homemade sangria than Al's was once---IN SPAIN.) Known for it's famous ice cream malt recipe (originally served at Burn's Pharmacy, a local iconic location), Al's desserts also include homemade cookies and pies. The food consists of very "clean" ingredients and is healthfully prepared, and served by an attentive and efficient wait staff. Al's is housed in a stunning and historic lawyers' building in downtown Elgin. Both upstairs and main level are visually beautiful and artfully decorated. Al's Cafe and Creamery is exceptional.
