We love Elgin Public House! We've been there as just a couple and with large groups. Both times the service was friendly and attentive. The rooms are dark, but it goes along with being a bar. They have live music at times, so it might be a little loud. I recommend their chicken sandwich on a pretzel roll or their meatloaf sandwich. Just a fun place to grab some good dinner.

So, round #2 working in Elgin for the weekend, having been chafed the other night at a "cafe" down the street. Immediately impressed with the improvement a bit of elbow room makes: lower crowd/music noise, better space between customers. The beer menu's detail and organization was a pleasant surprise, portending a level of attention to the food. After reviewing the menu selections, we opted to try the "Octoberfest specials", listed on a separate sheet of paper.

Our server-girl was friendly and genuine, offering apologies that the apple chutney had run out. We ordered the schnitzels anyway, which to our delight were properly pan sauted, with generous sides of spaetzle and sauerkraut (sweetened, I believe with chunks of apple or pear).
This stout plate was delivered for $13. Our over-sized British bottled beers arrived quite cold, with a chilled glasses, too. Execution here, without the snarky attitude we experienced at the other joint, demonstrates all the difference a few blocks makes.
Cheerio, Art Lovers!

The one and only time we went to the Public House we were less than impressed. It is old, tired, and dark. The booth seats were TAPED to keep together the rips. Food was mediocre at best.

Who would gave thought you could get gourmet desserts at a bar?! I have a definite sweet tooth and here they offer wonderful sweets treats. The burgers are great. Mac and cheese that is creamy with just a little kick. They offer a lot of different beers to choose from. Went on a Monday so not too crowded. Service could have been better.

My wife and I had a great dinner this evening. We first really liked the atmosphere -- the building is kind of really old, but really nice. Like old brick walls, very high ceilings, and very nice hard wood around the place. We ate upstairs where it was candle light, but there are tall windows so it is not like it's really dark. There are some Bose speakers on the wall, and the music selection for us was great. Finally, the food was just awesome. And the menu has a wide variety -- everything sounded so good! We will be back again, and again.
