So, round #2 working in Elgin for the weekend, having been chafed the other night at a "cafe" down the street. Immediately impressed with the improvement a bit of elbow room makes: lower crowd/music noise, better space between customers. The beer menu's detail and organization was a pleasant surprise, portending a level of attention to the food. After reviewing the menu selections, we opted to try the "Octoberfest specials", listed on a separate sheet of paper.
Our server-girl was friendly and genuine, offering apologies that the apple chutney had run out. We ordered the schnitzels anyway, which to our delight were properly pan sauted, with generous sides of spaetzle and sauerkraut (sweetened, I believe with chunks of apple or pear).
This stout plate was delivered for $13. Our over-sized British bottled beers arrived quite cold, with a chilled glasses, too. Execution here, without the snarky attitude we experienced at the other joint, demonstrates all the difference a few blocks makes.
Cheerio, Art Lovers!
