yuck yuck yuck if it wasn't so late at nite already (there is a reason this place still has vacancies when noone else does-beware!)and we were exhausted and it wasn't so hot outside (and we find out after check in and paid!! the ac in one of 2 rooms wasn't working so you guessed it we all ended up in one room but paid for two!!)

the vcr was missing parts so not working and the movies were ones that are free in the grocery store before grocery stores stopped carrying movies.

the smell when you enter is awful..and gets worse, pervading even the clothing in your suitcase) as you don't get used to it. In the lobby the creeping vine plants hang over you while you are eating (not) and the manager (very hard to understand his speaking) went straight to the waffle batter or maybe french toast & juice after sneezing a juicy one into both hands, One of our party hollered out "BLESS YOU!" but he didn't get it and went on to the orange juice. The coffee we had just poured and thank goodness noone had touched yet was left behind, but unfortunately not the awful memory.

Just in case business men are out there thinking this is a great deal when you are on your company's travel budget ..it is not...You almost have to get a room at another hotel just to take a shower after this one! yuck! We went to a restaurnat for breakfast and the first place we went after the hostess said how many was to the restroom to wash hands!

Old furnishings. Clean Rooms. The most important part was a clean bathroom. I can't tell you how important that one item is for me.

Older hotel but refurbished ok. Got a coupon book at a rest stop on I-70 and got for 39.99.
Room was clean, beds were good, everything else good. They have a VCR in every room and let you pick out a free movie for the night, 2 dollars each for more if you want. Breakfast was as usual for free. There is some kind of a plant in the lobby and the vines are growing on the ceiling in the lobby and breakfast area, didn't bother me but my wife didn't like it. Hotel is back in beside a field but area looks safe. About as cheap as it gets.

On the night that my family stayed here, this was the second hotel we checked in to.
(See my 1 Star review for the Travelodge in Vandalia, 20 miles away.)

Although it was moderately difficult to get to in the dark night, we finally figured out the way: there is a side road near the BP gas station that you must take in order to get to the hotel.

The Indian man at the desk was very friendly and he only charged us for 2 people, when we had three. The beds were very comfortable and clean. There were enough towels for everybody and the bathtub was clean.

Our car broke down in Effingham, Illinois and we had to get a hotel near the car dealer where our car had been towed to in town. Unfortunately, that hotel was the Howard Johnson Express. I cannot tell you how I wish we could have left this hotel, but without our car, we would have had to take a taxi, and didn't know if we would just be going from bad to worse. The appearance of the hotel wasn't too terrible, just not very clean. The breakfast was poor; (to be polite) the toaster and the waffle iron looked as though they had never been cleaned and I mean EVER. My husband had a cup of coffee and his spoon looked as if it hadn't been washed. The coffee itself was full of coffee grounds! The batter for the waffles was grey. When we went to check out, I handed the receptionist a coupon for our stay which was essentially worth about $4. He wasn't going to accept it, until I told him I'd be complaining about our entire stay, then he changed his mind. Incidentally, our daughter had checked TripAdvisor for our next night's stay in Oklahoma City and recommended the Howard Johnson Express there! I told her I really didn't want to go to another one, but she said the reviews were fantastic. We did stay there and it was the opposite extreme of this hotel in Effingham, so don't rule out all Howard Johnsons.

Yikes!! Double YIKES!! If this place was remodeled a few months ago, I'd hate to have seen what it was like before. Try the comfort suites nearby just a few dollars more but you will thank me.

I travel quite a bit and this was the WORST hotel/motel I've seen in over 5 years! The lobby was dark and dirty and smelled strongly of curry and stale oil. A plant's tendrils were hooked back and forth across the whole lobby ceiling. Nevertheless, we decided to check in, leave our suitcases in the cars, and check out the two rooms (5 people). The back door had no security lock. Screens on several windows were broken and curtains were hanging helter-skelter. The hallways were dark and dirty. The one room was awful...at least the smell of curry and oil wasn't as strong...it was overpowered by the smell of mold! The bathroom floor had hair on it and the counter was greasy. The other room wasn't appreciably better. We spent only 5 minutes in one room attempting to make reservations elsewhere. None were available in Effingham. We were able to check out with only a $4 "cancellation fee"-Thank God we weren't dunned the full amount! We drove an hour north to Champaign and were able to obtain two rooms at the La Quinta Inn for only slightly more than we would have paid at the Howard Johnson. It was WORTH the extra drive. La Quinta was a palace compared to the DUMP called "Howard Johnson Express".
